As for the soil, cool so moral of the story is compact compact compact, pure physical labour, plan on putting some logs down for the first few jumps and then dirt over then go into bigger ones :)

 

My december project

 

Rent a plate vibrator, chuck the logs idea, they will rot and destroy your jump. Compact at OMC, optimum moistire content. Losts of complicated tests to establish but the "eccentric" method is to take a handfull of watered soil, compress it into a clod and drop it on the ground form waist high. If it shatters into a loose clump of soil too dry. If it stays in a clod too wet. If it forms alittle pyramid with the rest scattered around it..... OMC. If you do not follow this rule you waste your time.

I did that some time ago on a new line we cut into the trees but the plate vibrator started picking up the clay?? Does this mean that it was not at OMC or that only the top layer was wet and below that was too dry? I think I am going to get a cement mixer to deliver the material next time..

 

Did you ever think you would be teaching some kids to build jumps, and you klds, did you ever think you were going to learn to build jumps from an 'ou oomie' with this degree of detail?? When you coming to the Cape H? I owe you a guided tour of the hill if I recall.

In case of damage, throw more soil on top. Beat the **** out of it. Repeat as needed.

It the clay was sticking, chances are the soil was too wet. Make sure the plate is clean and free of any major nicks or dents as this will pick up more material. You can also sprinkle a layer of dry dirt over the the moist soil and compact on that as it prevents the clay from clinging onto the plate. That said depending on the clay content and moisture of the clay,a plate compactor on a highly clayey soil would be relatively ineffective. The energy won't go into moving the soil particles closer together as the pore water pressure won't have time to dissipate.

........ and particle interlock will not take place........ but...... Yup you would make mud..... Glorious mud...... Is that not what it is all about!!!!!!!!

Coming to the Cape may still materialize when the next phases of our project starts form Durbs to East London to Cape Town. Manning a sattelite PM Office somewhere may still happen
