Hey guys,

found a place near my home which would be awesome for me to build a mini jump line, i enquired about soil and i wanted to know is it possible to build with soil filling?

I figured dirt is dirt and no matter what i can build jumps with it?

Possible? Stupid idea?

Stupid idea, coz it is the start of a habit hard to break and the jumps start to get ridiculous..

Dude that is your greatest achievement. What are you talking about?

All soil is not soil, neither is dirt a soil. A gravel material that is slightly plastic will work well. In all filling compaction is king. If you do not compact you will have ingress of moisture and that will create Sloppy mud. Gravel not compacted at optimum moisture content will not compact.

I know, never thought it would happen, it is THAT ridiculous!

All jumps should come with a warning label of some type.. Addictive, stay away!

Hi eccentric, you should really use your expertise for something greater than building roads for grumpy motorists. How about going into the dirt jump building business? I know Omega Man would commission you on the spot to build jumps that could launch riders into low earth orbit.

...and all the blisters I have today are from compacting!

Oom, is there a better clay than a G5 laterite sub-base, better for MTB that is?

Maybe that is why I am riding the Goutryn and installing ducts for the new mega fast optical fibre networks that are comimg.

A G5 laterite natural gravel that conforms to the specification of a G5 is any road builders dream. PI < 10, 63mm max size particles, CBR of 45 @ 95% Mod AASHTO and a swell of 0,5. A material with a PI of 10 cannot really be classified as a "clay" A G10 material is about the only one that has no PI specification. A G9 still has a PI < than 12 and a CBR of 7.

Remember one thing, A MTB has virtually no axle mass, that is unless I am on it!!!!! The only thing that can really happen is rut forming due to continued wheel use. If the material is compacted at optimum moisture content and water is kept away from the structure, serious ingress will only happen after continuous rain. There is not much you can do about that and the ultimate solution is very costly, going to a bitumen spray or asphalt.

There are three things that can damage a "road", namely, water, Water and WATER.

Ah, it sounds like you are saying keep water off the trails, and you off an axle.. :)

Thanks, suspicions confirmed. Tokai is using the best material..

I was the one going for the dam approach... instead i found a mate willing to donate his pool so that is in building at the moment :)

As for the soil, cool so moral of the story is compact compact compact, pure physical labour, plan on putting some logs down for the first few jumps and then dirt over then go into bigger ones :)
