You have to Davem

I think if you don't then you will start in wave 3. If you send mail even with a 01h20 time who knows....

Also not sure how they calculate the 70.3 times to compare to IM... do they double it plus another 10minutes? Means of you swam a 40 minutes on a 70.3 then they seed you at around - 01h30 ?

That would be bad science imo - consider the first 500m is chaos and you only find your space/rhythm thereafter. Perhaps we should look at time of people who have done both in the last year or two and see the comparison.

Is someone who did both the last few year willing to post their times for

research' and speculation purposes?

I think it will be about as fair as you can get. Everyone is a winner. Less chaos.

Agreed - it might even result in better time for all if you have a 'faster' group in front of you to pace/draft

Agreed. However they must give full IM finishers the benefit in my opinion. If you are a first timer then you cannot just walk into wave 2, you have to earn it. Sure if you are a fast swimmer then so be it...

I just feel they need to give a full IM finisher with a swim time of say 01h15 (Like me!!) the edge in seeding above a 70.3 finisher of say around a 35 minute swim...

Interesting - are you referring Full IM finishers from IMSA or generally? It will get tricky as conditions in say 2012 were different from other years.

What was your last 70.3 swim time and how did it compare to your 1h15? I think it would be fair to compare 35min 70.3 to a 1h15 Full.

I also wonder if they will go and verify all the times people 'claim' ....

Well I think 2013 should be the benchmark - give the okes the benefit as they raced it most recently. Put everyone faster than 01h15 into wave 2 to start off with. Then consider the previous years etc. It is for them to prove they belong in another wave....

Wonder if they will actually take 70.3 times in Jan into consideration??

I am sure that German guy can work this out....

I swam 45 a minute 70.3 last time around... But don't look at me. My swim is about as stable as some of the okes commenting on this thread over the last 2 weeks

I would hope so.... Surely they can build a simple excel model which pulls through times of guys who did 2013 and that have entered again? This should sort out the majority of the field (assuming 60% of the field is comeback) As for the shorter distance events using Bela Bela's times they will need to be careful. We all know how that went....

My IMSA was way South of your 1h15 so they will slap me in Wave 3 anyway.

Based on the rules, my 70.3 time will not count even if I have improved. Did 38 min at TriRock and 38 at the 2.1km 5150.

So I train really hard and get a bit faster say a 1h15 target. I can now rather be the faster swimmer amongst a bunch of slower swimmers, will likely get clearer water. Experience gives a small advantage at the start so actually may have a better clearer swim.

Garf, can you please give me a Master Class in Garf Swim Claw technique when we are at Midmar just in case?

Even though im not doing either 70.3 or Ironman in 2014, ill be your Bunny for your last years Swim Times

2013 70.3 Swim - 37:29

2013 Ironman Swim - 1h13:12

Not sure how you can take anyones swim times from 2 races like this and compare. I for instance only did about 5km of swimming per week leading up to 70.3 but then 10-12km per week for the 3 months between the 2 races.

But 2013 is probably the best year to try and take some stats as both swim conditions were pretty good compared to 2012's nightmare full Ironman swim which took me 1h35 in those swells.

I'd prefer being the slowest of the fast bunch.

Faster guys normally swim straighter and it's a lot easier swimming on someone's feet than making your own way.

I swam a 1.29 in 2012's bad conditions and came out in the top 1/3rd on the swim (somewhere in the 600's of the starters if memory serves) but my 1.19 last year was almost in the bottom 1/3rd. I took the swim very easy for a reason.

In any case, I'm not too bothered about what they do. As per my earlier post in the thread, I'm trying to get to the startline and enjoy it from there...

Thanks for this!

It is almost exactly double - so the chaos of the start is essentially offset by tiring over double the distance?

I think it is a given that most of us will be doing a lot more training in general from the full IM

And again will also depend on how straight you can swim (which I am shocking) and if the bouys are out accurately.

2013 70.3 I measured 2.24km, and Ironman 2013 4.31km.

Both count a Little 30-40m Jog down the beach at the start and again at the end , and Full obviously the 80odd Metres between laps.

JGR what did you swim last time?

My last 70.3 swim was 33mins - haven't done this race before so not sure what time ill get

I have always been a decent swimmer and have not focused much time but ive decided im going to try and work at it. Going for swim analysis tomorrow with Natalie Tissink - would like to swim closer to 30 mins

You all moaning about 1h15 :whistling: .... What about us special kids who swim a 1h40

Still have to do the distance, doesn't matter what time you start. (Hoping for a 7h00 start anyway. )
