go slower on the runs I think, one cant hammer all the runs, eventually something will have to give.. its about time out on the road, you need to save your self for tomorrow and the next day and the next etc..

Not hammering it at all. 5h45-6 m/km - a lot slower than my usual half marathon pace (5h00 or so/km) That also include the odd 1 in walk every 5kms or so.

its just strange as I have only gradually increased distance and have been running consistently for months and thought those type of runs would not feel so hard on the body.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. Seriously stressing a bit. Not so worried about swim, just the bike and the run.

The swim's the easy part.... Consistency is key, shorter runs and rides more often and 1 long ride and run in a week or so should get you the finishline.

Perhaps your running shoes are dead.

This can be the case even if they do not look worn.

What is your full marathon pace?

JGR - How often do u take a rest day?

With long distances and age related stuff (stress) you might need an extra rest day between long runs

Also check the shoes like Sidekick suggested

Lol

I also thought that and got new shoes 2 weeks ago - perhaps they just need to be run in more.

on that note - when the hell did running shoes start costing R2k .... jurra

My coach has given me a few days with a "big block" of running, then a few days of no running at all to recover.

like last week I did the following 14km wed, 8Km Friday, 6km Sat after 4:45 ride, sunday 21km, Monday 8km, Tuesday 13km, but then no running till Saturday, only riding and swimming etc. so I get 3 days off totally from running.. I must say by Tuesday I was BROKEN, but by Saturday I should be ok again (I hope), will then be another "BIG block" of running..

Have had similar issues with shoes...

Another idea is to do some of your distance on gravel/softer surfaces.

The benefit of run training comes from the activity and not the pain your legs feel from the impact (So I have heard).

Been doing a similar thing but my problem specifically is when the run get to 15km+ my legs just disappear and I just cant seem to have a 'break through' run of 2 hours where I don't feel shattered.

I don't take any type of supplements - maybe need something to help with recovery

Also read about doing 5-6hr hilly hikes after a long bike.

Works the muscles but not the HR so you can work on muscular endurance without tiring so quickly.

have you read this? recovery during training is massively important, else you don't have anything for your next session...

Like most im starting to panic a little .....

Im getting in a lot of session but cant seem to break through into bigger distances.

Maybe to much during the week then no legs on the weekend?

Runs start to get really tough at about 18km - 20km / 2hrs and then the next day im totally wiped out (really sore muscles) ... not sure if it nutrition or fatigue or maybe something muscular.

In the exact same place as you two gents. Must pull finger and suck it up.

On a completely unrelated note. I wonder if Mr Wolff frequents the hub. Wonder if he actually reads the comments?

Thanks

Yes - I read this before.

Currently hit a recovery shake after my session (GU Chocolate Shake - sometimes I mixed some whey powder as well). Use a foam roller most nights and now a massage every week ....

I also heard recently that vit D deficiency effects everything as it stops the absorption of other nutrients ...Going to start taking L Glutaime
