The last time I swam in the ocean was last years IM.

The last time (and only time) I swam open water since IM last year was at Midmar 70.3. You guys living at the coast are so lucky.

You mean swimming in Emmarentia Dam isn't as enjoyable as the ocean?! :whistling:

How often do you guys train with your wetsuit before IM? I am doing one long swim a week from this week onwards just to get use to the thing again. I usually get some interesting looks from fellow swimmers at the VA pool.

I feel it works the shoulder muscles slightly more compared to when not using a wetsuit. For a long IM swim I would suggest using it as much as possible to make sure your shoulders don't get tired from it.

I've also got a sleeveless wetsuit and might even consider using this for IM...if I can still fit in it...its about 13 years old....

I reckon that doing some long sets with hand paddles makes up for the lack of suit in the pool

I find that I swim a lot faster in the suit. If you take IM distance I swim at least 5 - 10 minutes faster. The suit helps you as does the salt in the water.

You don't need to train with it but I would think swim at least once in it before PE....

I will also go swim on the Sat in my suit in the Ocean.

That should help, or with a pull buoy.

While a wetsuit does help you swim better and faster, full length ones are harder on the shoulders than a sleeveless...I've used both and that's why I prefer the sleeveless...it keeps my heavy legs up and does not restrict my arms in any way.

My wife does not do tri's but swims quite well, a few years ago she was persuaded decided to do a tri and bought a wetsuit (full length). She noticed straight away that her shoulders were more tired from the wetsuit.

I find there is a massive difference in shoulder fatigue caused by wetsuit not being put on propertly - ie. the ends of legs and arms half way up calves / forearms, crothch and underarms pulled all the way up as far as possible, etc. If not done, the wetuit pulls down on the shoulders, which causes the fatigue (you work harder in the recovery phase to bring your arm forward). I think probably 75% of people don't put their wetsuits on as well as they could.

That said, I have just moved from an 07 / 08 entry level wetsuit to a latest model super premium one (don't ask what it cost me!) and the difference is unbeleivable...

My experience:

Entry level wetsuit - not put on optimally: shoulders tired from 400m

Entry level wetsuit - put on properly: shoulders tired from 1500m

Premium wetsuit - put on properly: swim for days...

Agree it does make a big difference to put it on properly. Try make sure the arms are pulled in the direction of the shoulders so there is less tension in the shoulder material.

My full length ws is a sailfish of some sorts, not sure where it stands in the evolution scale

Agreed, I actually have to get into the water and adjust my suit to get it fitting correctly. almost impossible on dry land, need to get water in the suit to let it move up my arms, legs etc, then get out and let the water run out..

once I have done that, am good to go..

Agreed, that is the main aim for my warmup swim, flood the suit and make sure it settles where it should be

Keep us updated Alton and good luck. Cant they built you a special cast or something?

spoke to the surgeon today, if they operate, i won't be able to ride.. the pins and wire etc could break off inside..

second option is to treat and see if it recovers enough in 3 weeks, get a cast of sorts, do the race and then operate afterwards.. got appointment to see him on tuesday to get better X-rays and chat re the options.. holding thumbs and saying prayers..
