JCG1 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Hi allI have just completed my On One Indread with horizontal drop out but I can not get the chain to stay on. As the pedal turns the chain tension changes. I changed the chain and chain blade even imported a tug but still not working. What can be the cause and how do I fix this? Please helpThanks
jcmeyerSS Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 That's strange. You say the tension changes?Something is wrong.Make sure you have not got your tension too tight, (I made this mistake the first time on my Peace, that also has horizontal dropouts) this can put huge pressure on your BB and create uneven wear. Most likely the case.Check your Chain line if that is perfect then something is out of round.Could be:Your BB bearings.Chain ring not round or worn uneven.Chain ring and chain not matched. (eg 1/8" chain ring and chain 2/32")Wheel line might not be straight (common with horizontal drop outs)
divernick Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Do some chain line math. Www.singlespeedafrica.co.za/blog
divernick Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Are you using a QR or bolt on? Post pics of your setup.
BBN Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) Must be chain line!http://www.singlespeedafrica.co.za/2013/06/07/perfect-your-chainline/ Edited July 24, 2013 by BBN
shadow1 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Get a halflink or two, this will enable you to slam the wheel all the way foward in the dropouts...works like a charm
shaper Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 How true is your chain line?+1 on the chain line, by eye it might look straight, try to find a straight edge (piece of wood) and line up the chainring and sprocket and the sprocket will probably be slightly off straight.
droo Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 The other thing it could be is that the chainring never quite aligns axially with the crank, which means that the chain tension will vary at different points in the stroke. Set it up so it's tight at the tightest point, otherwise you'll wear out components pretty fast. But as above, check your chainline first and take it from there.
JCG1 Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Found the problem it was the sprocket moving on the freewheel hub 0.7 mm. Spacers cut from a beer can and problem shorted!! Thanks for the help.
