History has been made: Schildknecht first athlete to win an IRONMAN race seven consecutive times!

Swiss Ronnie Schildknecht captured his seventh title at the IRONMAN Zurich Switzerland powered by ewz becoming the first athlete in history to do so. German Anja Beranek captures first-ever IRONMAN title.

ZURICH (July 28th, 2013) – German Anja Beranek said she was „the luckiest girl in the world“ that very moment and Ronnie Schildknecht, sitting next to her at the champion’s press conference jumped right in: „Well then I am the luckiest guy“. After not being able to finish the Frankfurter Sparkasse IRONMAN European Championship three weeks ago Beranek claimed her first ever IRONMAN win in style: After chasing Swiss Céline Schärer for 50km on the bike Beranek got in the lead and never let go. „Still it was only a few steps from the finish line when I realized: I’ll win this thing.“

Schärer however put in an impressive performance in her first IRONMAN appearance and got out of the water fourth overall after completing her swim in 52:38. „I knew I could swim with the best but never figured I could stay anywhere near the athletes like Anja for the rest of the race“, said Schärer placed second. Defending IRONMAN Zurich Switzerland, powered by ewz champion Erika Csomor of Hungary came in third. „It was a tough working day and the heat really hurt. I am happy I managed to finish third“, said Csomor.

A race for the ages

„In a race like this you really can’t be tactical. All you can do is listen to your body“, Ronnie Schildknecht had said before the race. Schildknecht proved to be a good listener on Sunday though he claimed that „It was one huge battle with myself. I had some pretty negative thoughts on my mind when I got off my bike. My legs were cramping and I really didn’t feel like another win was within reach this time.“ Well, it was. Schildknecht chased down fellow countryman Jan van Berkel on the run, finally passing him a third into the marathon. Van Berkel stopped shortly thereafter and was unable to finish the race.

„I really didn’t spend a single thought on winning for the seventh time in a row. It was about winning one more time. Everybody expected it and the pressure certainly was there“, Schildknecht said. Ivan Raña tried to catch Schildknecht but admitted „there was no chance to get any close to Ronnie. He was one fire – and that wasn’t because of the heat.“ Per Bittner of Germany came in third completing the podium.
