December holiday Mossel bay & Hartenbos cycling routs

Hi all

 

Planning on going away this December but would not like the fitness to drop to badly.

Maybe doing the Attakwas which is early January.

 

 

I would like to know if any of the happy campers know of safe roads for some good hours of cycling on the South coast at Mossel bay & Hartenbos area. Would help out a lot.

 

I was also thinking of sharing the routs on Garmin connect for others to download.

i sometimes take the route from mosselbay to klein brak and then go via dirtroads to eight bells mountain inn and back via brandwag and hartenbos to mosselbay.marius van der mescht at Monties cycles in msb should be able to hook you up with some routes as well.

There's a group leaving from Jonny's bike shop weekdays at 5h30 or 6, not really sure. They do an out and back (50km or so) that they call the Brandwag ride. Then you can do a loop around Grootbrak from there is that is not far enough. Grootbrak included will be around 100km starting from Mossel bay.

 

Then theres a Herbertsdale ride as well. A bit sh!tty on the N2 but once you turn off after the Engen garage the roads are very quiet. And some nice climbs as well. app 100km.

 

Lots of mtb as well.

Marius at Montie's is your man.They have rides leaving from Voorbaai Shell. Get the map.

Still exploring mostly on Grootbrak side.

You can ride from Kleinbrak through to Grootbrak , Left at Spar nice climb. Jonkersberg ,Friemersheim, Cross Kleinbrak river in knee deep water twice,and on to Bottlierskop .About 60km.

Many roads to choose from. I drive my wife nuts when we're in the car. "Go here ,turn there".

Edit : Worth visiting Jakkalsvlei wine farm for a cheese platter if you're in the Herbertsdale area.

I will be there over there long weekend after the Karoo to coast and will try the routs out on Monday and Tuesday.

There's an event in that neck of the woods called the Grabadoo, runs on the 31st of Dec. Its got a 62km route (± 15km on tar, rest on dirt road or jeep track). Starts and finishes in one of the 'braks (think Groot). Some absolutely deadly climbs and pretty good scenery also. Some of the residents get a bit cranky though:

A really good route I ride when in Mosselbay is to Robinson's Pass. Its about a 85km ride from town and a really good workout. The top of the pass is at 860m above sea level. Just did it this long weekend pass. The nice thing about the ride is that you usually have tailwind back to town. I managed to ride the 42km ride back from the top of the pass in 1hour. That's an average of about 40km/h back from the top of the pass.

Harkerville near Knysna is a must day outing!
