Anyone ever see these ones... They must be discontinued as they aren't on 5.10s site.

Those are 5.10 Kestrels (a 2012 model). Uses the same sole as the Maltese Falcon

I know that not all the FiveTen models make it onto the site. I don't know why, but when I was first looking at purchasing Maltese Falcons they weren't listed. (I did look at the Kestrel too, but ended up going for the Falcon).

I'm not sure whether or not the Kestrel is still in production though. Maltese Falcon is probably your next best bet if you're wanting FiveTen SPDs that are a bit lighter and less bulky than the Minnaars/Hellcats

Thanks! I'll have a look at the Maltese Falcon then. I've always preffered a less bulky skate shoe too so thought the Kestrel was cool.

So anyone else notice which FiveTens the top 2 men were wearing yesterday?!

Especially surprising for Mr Minn, not wearing his signature editions, but rather opting for the Maltese Falcons.

EDIT: Maybe I should start wearing my Maltese Falcons again, to make me fast, hahaha! They've been gathering dust for the past 4 months

They get their first ride this afternoon... will see how the new Mi6 rubber fares!

And?

Aaaannd... now after 3 rides I'm starting to get used to them.

If one has ridden with any of the "conventional" FiveTens then they will know about the "lift to adjust" technique required when one wants to change up their foot position on the pedal.

Well these are quite different. If one is sitting on the saddle, placing relatively little weight on the pedal, then they can shimmy around to their hearts content to find that all important pre-jump foot position.

However if one stands on the pedals they're locked in, nothing short of being T-boned by a cement truck will shift

your feet off those pedals.

So I guess they offer the best of both worlds.

I read a review on the regular VXi's and the test riders stated that it took a bit of getting used that whole weighted/unweighted difference between these and regular "spotty sole" FiveTens. They also said that the S1 rubber on the VXi's "sweet spot" gets even better with time. (So the Mi6 rubber should do the same).

But yeah, maybe Capricorn has some insights to how he has found the VXi sole pattern

I read a review somewhere that they smooth portion of the sole presents quite a problem in damp or wet conditions. They say that the lack of grip is something to behold. Now you may say that they are designed to grip on the bike but some places (not necessarily here in sunny SA) would require a rider to walk up a trail to be able to ride down and not everywhere is nice and dry like our exotic trails. Just something to think about.

Here's what the VitalMTB guys said about off-the-bike use in their test.

One of the reasons we love Five Tens is the phenomenal grip they also offer off the bike while hiking, and the Freerider VXi shoes did well on rocks and hard-pack. When things get loose or wet, and especially in loose over hard-pack conditions, you've got to be aware of your footing. We almost lost it a few times, but we'd take this shoe over most other offerings because the rubber and ability to quickly readjust makes up for it.

So thatbeing the regular S1 rubber, I'm sure the VXi Elements with Mi6 rubber should also fair well (possibly better) off the bike. the Tue test would be to climb the Burj Khalifa.

Glad you managed to find some... So which ones did you get?

Thanks for the great advice!
