Noob Shifter Question

Hi,

My road bike has a 8-spd groupset and the one shifter is broken. Finding the exact replacement shifter is proving difficult...bike is collecting dust now

Can I use a 9-spd or 10-spd shifter as a replacement?

I've used a 9 speed mtb shifter on my 8 speed cassette , the highest and lowest gears will work fine if the limiters are set correctly.

The gears in between might jump a little. So I would go with a 9 speed shifter and hope for the best. But i'm sure you will be able to source a 8 speed shifter somewhere. Post an add or phone various bike shops.

Good luck , hope you can fix it

just my 2c

Get a 9 speed cassette as well to match the shifter.

Then you'll also need to change the derailleur.

No, you won't.

Assuming it's Shimano then the pull ratios are the same so the 8 speed derailleur will work with a 9 speed shifter

Thanks for the replies. the bike has the dura ace 7400 groupset on it. I wasnt sure if I had to upgrade most of the components to accommodate 9spd shifters or not.

Components should be all okay I have done this with plenty of older and cheaper builds. Replace your shifters and obviously the cassette and you should be good to go.
