Hello Guyz,

I am new to MTB and decided to buy my first MTB most probably a 29er.

Can anyone reccommend me any good and reliable entry level 29er under 5000.

I am taking MTB initially for hobby and lesiure purpose but will move to more advance bikes later when I am fully ready.

You expert opinions and advices will be highly appreciated.

Cheers n Regards

If you are starting out and wanna buy entry level go for a good 2nd hand 26er, probably hardtail. Like you said, you wanna upgrade later (not intended as a suggestion that 29 is better than 26). Afaik, 29er's don't fall in the sub 5000 category.

If you found a new 29er under 5 k it will be a heap. There are so many good deals out there on 26ers as Dale says, go that route untill you see what you need and what actually works for you.

I bought my first 29er a new Silverback Vida 5 for R5k, i had no complaints. slowly upgraded all the components, first wheels then crankset and finally shifters and dérailleurs all to 10 speed XT. all 2nd hand off the Hub at great prices. I sold the bike after 12 months of use for R6500. I suggest you go to Silverback website and find the closest dealer and see what the Vida range sells for

If you buy a bike with the intention of slowly upgrading the parts ... rather save and buy a better specked model.

It always works out much more expensive to upgrade than just getting the next model.

I am not sure what you paid for your secondhand parts, JWF, but new you would look at an estimate

SLX Crank - R2000

XT Rear Deraileur - R900

Cheap nothing fancy wheelset - R3000

XT Shifters - R1000

That is around R7k without upgrading the Fork to Air (R4000) or chain, or cassette to 10 speed.

For the R5k you spent + R7 in upgrades = R13k you can buy a bike with all those components + an Air Fork.

The only 29er I can think of that comes close to R5k will be Avalanhce XX1X with Acera 24 speed spec and mechanical disk brakes.

I paid R800 for a 3x10 XT crank and bb, R500 for both the XT 3x10 shifters. Bought Novatec hubs for R1600 on ebay and rebuilt wheels using existing spokes and rims for R400 at Cyclelab. Then the XT rear der was R600 and the front was R250. I also sold all the old parts for R1200 on the Hub. Like Ahsanrz I did not want to nor have more than R5k to spend initially and did not want to buy a secondhand bike that may have been thrashed. Once I had decided I enjoyed mtb more than road I upgrade parts as I had cash. Eventually sold my road bike and Silverback and bought a dual sus Scott Spark 29er frame from Conrad on the hub and built it up. It has cost less than R12k including a Fox F32 fork and Sun Ringle rims.

it would have taken a year or so to save the extra R7k in your scenario and in that time I would have nothing to ride .....

Buy, like you did, save, sell ... then upgrade!

To buy a 5k 29er then upgrade the components is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.... What's the point of a full XT/X9X0 bike with a 3kg frame......

Buy yourself a a cheap bike, use it till you feel you are ready for a better bike and then buy yourself a better bike. Upgrading components is a bottomless money shredding pit, even more so when you trying to turn a cheap bike into a s-works... Remember, there's a massive difference between a entry level bike frame and even a medium spec bike frame in most brands.... No point building up on a cheap frame.

For a newbie, I'd seriously advise you to avoid second hand....

Many thanlks Guyz for valuable feedback.

My preference to 29er was due to my height and weight issue. i went to many LBS and they all suggested me to go for 29er instead of 26.

I am 6ft 1inch and weight around 85.

I do not know whether 26 will be okay for me or not.

They'll all recommend 29er as they're going to be more expensive than the 26er.

You'll be fine on the right size 26er...

My Vida 5 frame weighed 2.2kg. I have since bought an Orbea Alma 29er frame which weighed 2.1kg (this bike sells for R25k new) I also own a Niner EMD whose frame weighs 1.9kg. I also own a Scott Scale Expert 29er and it's frame weighs 2.3kg. I have also ridden all these bikes and the Vida is not lacking in anyway. Don't tell me my advise / opinion is ridiculous. If you have unlimited funds good for you. My advise to someone wanting to spend max R5k on a 29er is sound unlike your don't buy secondhand get a S-works theory

Axis are good value for money. They manage to keep the price down but still put decentish parts.

Other capable bands that will come in at your budget is Titan, Silverback, Raleigh and Diamondback
