mikethebike234 Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Okay so it was my birthday on friday and I had been saving up for these really beautiful wheels which I bought yesterday ..am now itching to put them on the bike the wheels are Mavic Crossmax SLRs ..I got them for an utterly ridiculous price ..regardless I have still put myself in the poor house and have this nagging feeling that I have done something wrong ... but I'm sure its buyers remorse.... so no one tell me anything bad about please them otherwise I feel ill enough already ...... anyway I need to put some bits on them namely a cassette, new discs and centerlock converters my questions are ....1. the cassette - the cassttte on my current wheels is nearing replacement time anyway so has to be replaced ..I'm with a cheaper cassette for now namely a shimano hg50 or an hg61 what is the differance between them? besides a slight differance in price? I've had good experiance with the hg50 so I'd be happy with that if its just the weight of 100mls of beer differance... 2. Discs do I have to use discs the same as what the make of brakes are eg only tektro discs with tektro brakes or will any discs do as long as they are 160 mm as is on the bike now? should I maybe just use exhisting discs which are not in fantastic condition.... 3.Centerlock converters - there seem to be a few out there and prices vary wildly from R150 rand to over R400 what would be the best price to quality ratio in the R200 bracket .. or does it not make that much differance at the end of the dayBear in mind that I although I got these wheels for an absolute steal I have still done serious damage to my bank balance and should probably not do anything with the wheels untill I actually do have money....but I cant take it they are screaming at me......and yes I know about the spokes.....but i couldnt resist..the price was just to good...

Just buy the correct disks - or am I wrong? Check www.buycycle.co.za I bought very nice disks there for R 149 each last month. As far as I know you can use any discs with any brakes, just make sure you use the correct pads - some discks only work with resin pads.
DR ◣◢ Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 You can run Shimano Discs with other brand brakes. Used XT discs with Hope brakes. Worked just fine.
Guest Omega Man Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 (edited) What he ^^ said. I currently run Shimano Ice tech rotors with hope brakes on my AM bike. I've also run Formula rotors with hope and Avid brakes. And I've used Avid rotors with Hope brakes. You don't need to match your brake brand with rotors. Most rotors are more or less the same thickness. The only 3 differences I know of are the Hope ventilated rotors. (You don't want them. They are k@k heavy only come in 203 and cost over 1k each.)Hope V2 rotors. To be used with V2 Brakes. And as far as I can tell the Formula rotors ar a teeni bit fatter than shandard.
