Situated only 45 minutes north of Pretoria on the N1 Highway, Sondela Nature Reserve again plays host to the Sondela SuperClassic road race on 26 October 2013.

The road event presents two distances on a flat and fast course – a perfect last training ride two weeks prior to the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

The long ride covers 104km while a 40km option is also on offer. Both distances are on flat routes and will provide a good moral booster before the Cycle Challenge. The roads are quiet and the road surface good.

Sondela has been a popular bushveld getaway for many years and the resort excels in hosting mass participation cycling events, evidenced by the big Sondela Mountain Bike Challenge, which attracted 1500 riders in winter this year.

Management are now putting it all in place for a wonderful family weekend on 26 October at Sondela with lots of kids entertainment, a massive beer tent and all sorts of delicious eats and drinks.

A controlled bike park is available for riders. Participants will receive wrist tags at registration which will ensure safe keeping of bikes while riders enjoy the festivities over the weekend.

The event starts at the entrance to Sondela, which is off the main off-ramp into Bela Bela, and ample parking is cordoned off from the Sondela entrance back towards the N1 Highway.

Ample parking ushers will be on duty to help riders get parked and ready and they will look after vehicles during the course of the day.

Route description:

There are only two right turns on the long ride and only one on the short distance ride, which makes the going very safe. The roads are also quiet.

The 104km route goes out towards Settlers on the R516. It goes through Settlers before turning right back onto the R516.

Riders carry on straight with this road until the Crecy Road left turn. The lovely smooth road surface continues to the T-junction where the route takes a left turn again onto the R33. This section of road does have potholes which have been filled, but riders have to be aware of uneven road surface.

Just after the 70km mark another left turn awaits before the route joins up with the R516 left and right back towards Sondela.

The short ride goes out to Settlers and turns immediately left back on the R516 towards Sondela.

There is one waterpoint on the short ride at the R516 joining and the long ride boasts three waterpoints.

As with all ASG Events, event medical specialists Helivac are on hand to look after cyclists medical requirements and emergencies that might arise.

The local Think Bike marshals will be on hand to ensure safe passage for cyclists and the local metro police have a big presence on race day to assist.

Registration:

23 October: Cycle Lab, Fourways; 10:00 – 16:00

24 October: Solomons Cycles, Gift Acres Shopping Centre, Lynwood Road; 10:00 – 16:00

25 October: Sondela Nature Reserve Caravan Park: 14:00 – 18:00

Route description:

While the 40km route remains as is from last year – it goes out from Sondela and does a loop around Settlers - the organisation has had to make changes to the 104km route due to road works.

The long route will go out past Settlers on the Marble Hall Road, taking a left towards the R33 Road before turning back to Sondela.

There is one waterpoint on the short ride at the R516 joining and the long ride boasts four waterpoints.

As with all ASG Events, event medical specialists Helivac are on hand to look after cyclists medical requirements and emergencies that might arise.

The Road Rangers will be on hand to ensure safe passage for cyclists and the local metro police have a big presence on race day to assist.

MTB Fun Ride

Riders who fancy doing a double header over the weekend can enter the Sondela MTB Fun ride the day after the road race.
