Avalanche Max with 20 inch wheels. They are the cheapest of the "quality" kids bike and come with a suspension fork and 6speed gripshift. They retail for about R1 800.

There are cheaper ones that will fall apart and more expensive ones that offer more than a little girl needs

My son is 5 and rides the Specialized Kiddies bike, its an awesome little bike.

He rides the 16 inch. When I read the sizing guide, I seem to remember the 20 was only for +-7 year olds.

We still have space to put the saddle up and he is fairly big for his age.

My 5 year old boy rides a 20" Raleigh Roost BMX. Bought on Gumtree for R350, works fine.

It came with training wheels and we took them off shortly before his 5th birthday. He regularly does 10-12km rides with me (even though we have to stop every now and then for water breaks).

It makes a huge difference to get an aluminium frame rather than steel. Kids bikes are heavy. My kids used the Silverback Atomic but I am not sure they make a 20 inch anymore. Titan have a similar bike which looks like good value. They could get one at Morningside Cyles or Westdene Cycles (probably cheapest there). Momsen make a brilliant 20inch bike (JR20) for just over R3000, but its not really worth it unless the bike will be passed down to younger siblings and be used for a lot of mountain biking.

Another option is Axis (Starlet) - they are Shimano equipped and is well within your budget. I believe the brand is involved with Scott. Good value for money while still being decent quality I found. That is taking into account this is for kids and not to ride the epic.
