Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know if Shimano WH500 road wheels would work for a Heavier Rider in the 110 kg PLUS size???

If not what would be the best alternative for training purposes...the bike is Shimano equipped?

Lastly I have been reading on The Hub the Road Tyres can help with ride comfort ..any suggestions will be appreciated...

Thanks!

Good advice above ...

Good wheelbuilder + multi-spoked rim/hub (32 should do) = reliable training wheels.

Add some 25c tyres for some added comfort.

Not many available, but Gatorskins are a reasonable option.

Specialized also have a few options which seem to be popular with the local bike shops.

Those wheels have too few spokes for durability. They will be strong enough to not collapse under you, but not durable enough to carry you reliably for long distances. When talking wheel "strength" we divide the term into strength and durability.

Most wheels are strong enough but only multi-spoke wheels with heavier rims are durable enough for heavy duty use.

We have plenty of Schwalbe 25C in stock as well.

Im in KZN and been looking around around for 25C's. They seem pretty scarce..or am I blind?

Definitely not blind ... they are scarce.!

Seems many LBS's aren't even aware of their existence. LOL

As Naas mentioned above, Evobikes have the Schwalbe Ultremo ZX 25c @ R495. They were R395 when I first spotted them ... maybe they need to return to that price so that I can buy some. :whistling:

Specialized dealers should be able to offer a few options too - most will probably recommend the Roubaix which is quite unique in that it is a 23/25C tyre ... 23c tread on a 25c casing. (R400 - R600)

And of course there's Conti Gators which most shops will either have or be able to get. (R400 - R500)

Maybe I can muscle in on this thread to ask a question of my own?

So you stand 2m tall and weigh +-150kgs and want to start road riding, obviously the size of bike will be determined by a proper fitment. But what wheels would be suitable and strong enough for a rider of these proportions? And I presume a 25c tire would also be in order? And is it advisable to suggest a carbon frame, or aluminium?

Thanks Johan! This is in line with what I have picked up reading some previous (stompies) threads.

I am after a strong set of wheels that will last. I tested a bike a few weeks back and it had mavic CXP 33's with Ultegra Hubs and plenty spokes and was mightily impressed. What do you suggest in terms of skewers and bearings??
