I started cycling August 2011.

Did a 30km mtb race at Dirtmax.

Then did my first road race 94.7 in November 2011.

Year 1 time 4:21

Year 2 time 3:15

Year 3 time : hopefully 2:50

The question is how did your times improve and over what period?

I am with a coach for the past 4 months, but cant really see any improvements, but then again it takes like a year for a program to show improvement?? Am I right or wrong?

I saw improvement within 6 months with my coach but I followed my training plan to the T. Shaved 32 min off my 94.7 last year for a sub 3.

I started in august 2012 and measure my improvements over a 30km off road training route, with 300m climbing, that I do often.

30km route started with an average speed of 18km per hour, this week did it at 23.3km per hour.

Then strava tracks my improvements on the climbs, while the races show me how slow I actually am.

Must admit I now enjoying my riding much more than when I started, even starting to enjoy the climbs!

Depending on your age and how fit you were you should see improvements within at least twelve weeks if not before if you ask me.

Do you feel that you are training really different from when you did not train alone?

Do you push yourself to the point you should according to the program?

I had training videos from Carmichael systems which I used before the coach on the idt for interval training.

I was used to interval training before I started with the coach.

The question you asked me if I push myself hard enough is exactly the same question I asked myself.

That's my problem. The couch sends me an email every week with a couple of old training programs he used for someone else in 2004.

There is no analysis or progress report from him.

My final decision is what is costing me R600 p/m I was doing anyway on my own.

His excuse is it takes at least a year to see any progress. :(

Any training will give you some improvement. But training programs should not be generic and should take the effects of it into account for future training sessions. Everyone reacts differently to different workouts so that should be reviewed. I have never had a coach and do all my training myself. I know what I should do and incorporate that into my training.

And it shouldn't take a year to see improvement!

I got myself sufferfest videos. If I do interval training 3 times a week, with 2 lsd rides and 1 race on a weekend that should do the trick. And I got R600 extra a months to spend on something else

don't forget recovery, I increased my recovery time between rides and performance increased dramatically, oh and a new bike always helps

Ha ha, I got a brand new Madone 6.9, it did not work

I do 2 week rides on my IDT 1 hour per session and 1 weekend ride of 3 hours. Got me to a sub 3 for 94.7 and I am a big guy 95kg. Quality training over quantity.

Cycling takes time. Body have to adapt at overload. Depending on your age and training, you should be better after 4 months of hard training. Don't be in a hurry, this is our sport not work. After 10000 hrs you will be a seasoned rider says the Europeans. Crazy?

Just also be a bit careful with interval training three times a week. You also need recovery time. Perhaps think of substituting one interval session for a tempo session.
