2014 Specialized Rumor-yes?/no?

Have the option of a 2014 Specialized Rumor for R20 000 (an entry level model) as an upgrade to a R10 000 hardtail trek that is 3years old and weights 14kg. I am getting into stage racing, ride about 3-4 times a week in the mtb (and other days on the road)

I do a fair number of 30-60km MTB events and am of above average ability - but not amazingly talented or by any means near a podium finisher. just fit and only because i work hard at it.

would value any thoughts and comments on whether this is good value or money and a good move in terms of an upgrade.

the online write ups seem to be very positive. my thinking is that you will have yourself a decent frame that you can upgrade the components on later on as you wish.

Sorry but I wouldn't go for the rumour.120mm is too much travel for your needs and Specialized went real cheap on the base model.Suntour fork, tektro brakes,x fusion rear shock,9 speed on a 20K bike. You can get a carbon fate for less than that ,which will be much better imo.The base rumor that i saw was between 13-14kg so you going to spend lots of money and upgrade the hell out of it to get it to a decent weight. If you want a duel just go with a small epic.It will be easier for resale later and I don't believe you need more than 100mm of travel for your needs.

Just my 2C.

Mr Stringbean - must send you many thanks for your words of advice and your comments. Have since looked very carefully at options and specific needs for me from a bike. Alas, as pretty as it is, it is not the sensible or financially clever choice of bike for me.

Your words and comments are much appreciated and saved me for a major faux par... please continue to share freely, and save others from bicycle buying disasters.

Eternally grateful.
