Hi hubbers.

I had to sort out my brakes and we are in the middle of nowhere with the closest lbs 400km away. The brakes were spongy and squealing and did not even come close to stopping me. The previous owner of the bike tried to bleed them and spilled oil on the pads.

I took the pads out and placed them on a baking tray and grilled them for 30 min. At first they were smoking as the oil came out. I took them out sanded the black off with a fine sanding paper and placed them in for another 30 min.

I went down to my local build-it and co-op to buy all the necessary bleeding goodies. :whistling:

Here are the steps I followed.

  1. Remove the caliper from your frame and remove the brake pads.
  2. Open the bleeding port on the lever and screw in the irrigation fitting with the little piece of pipe.
  3. Fit the smaller syringe at the top.
  4. Pull some mineral oil into the bigger syringe and place its pipe over the bleeding nipple at the caliper.
  5. Open the bleeding nipple just enough that a small amount of mineral oil can pass through. Start pushing the oil to the top.
  6. You will see the old oil emerge at the top and the bubble will start to pop out. I went on with this until the red shimano oil appeared. Close the bleeding nipple at the caliper. By replacing the syringe plunger you will not spill oil when pulling it out at the lever. I threw the old oil away. Replace the empty syringe without its plunger.
  7. Open the nipple and continue pressing oil to the top. Once you are happy that there are no new bubbles forming and its new oil you can close the bleeding nipple and take the big syringe off.
  8. Squirt the excess oil back into the oil container and replace only the piece of pipe to the bleeding nipple.
  9. Open the bleeding nipple slowly that oil can run back through the system and into the pipe over the caliper nipple. That way you bled it to both sides and all the air should be out.
  10. When you're happy that all air is out, close the bleeding nipple, take off the pipes and the small syringe and replace the bleeding port screw. Make sure that the port screw has its o ring on. Throw the excess oil form the small syringe back into the shimano container.
  11. Replace the pads and the center the caliper by pumping the brakes and holding them while you fasten the caliper bolts.
  12. BOOM, Bobs your uncle.

This worked for me and I am not a qualified bike mechanic so use it or don't use it.

Please ask if there's any questions or if you are not quite sure what I mean.

Happy riding
