Hey Blackheart, I would say the best advice, is for a few weeks ride slow and steady, just put miles in the legs as opposed to much hard work.

Then again if you area already fit, maybe include a few hill repeats.

oh yes, teach yourself to drink a lot on the bike, and eat on the bike. Forget about gels and sugar drinks, just drink water and eat decent food.

Cool, thanks.

Started doing the long and slow thing in december, doing about 15hrs a week.

Iost 2 weeks in Jan after having bikes nicked, then lost another 2 weeks with the flu.

Feb and March has been 10-15hrs a week slow and steady. Maybe time to start throwing in some hill intervals.

Totally agree about gels and sugar drinks - gave those up a few years ago.

I do like the 32gi drink, and food is sarmies, biltong, potato's etc.

Lets keep in touch.

Cheers.

Some tips I can give you. Take it slow in the start save your energy for the hills rest on the down hills. Drink and eat another it's going to be your longest day ever in the saddle and remember you are finishing at night it's very cold. I have done the up and down ride this will be my third time. Good luck it's a lot of fun if you got friends riding with you, don't do it alone it will drive you mad.

LOL droomer, I am doing it with three friends, me, myself and I. We are really looking forward to it !

Here is my favourite hill to ride up. It is about 1km long, but I do enjoy riding up it. Locals will know the hill well.

On the down side, the last three days I have had a severe unhappy tummy and have kept fit running to the loo. This has kinda kept me off the bike, and not what I was planning as this week I wanted to step the distances I ride up a considerable amount with less than a month to go :(.

OMW I plan to do it with single entry. Hopefully I will find someone that rides my speed. :)

OK, so an update. With the long weekend we went away and I took the bike with. Got in several 40km rides. Still a long way to go till I can feel confident that I can do this.

The tricky part is it is easy to ride nice and easy and keep the heart rate down - but that does not help with the riding so slow. So with minimal time - it is a fine balance between speed (strength) and heart rate (miles in the legs).

Of course the cape it bucketing with rain, and whilst this may happen on the ride, I see no reason to go out there and get cold and wet (just yet). So back to the IDT it has been.

This has to be one of the most difficult posts I am about to set down on the hub.

I have to pull out of TransKaroo 2014.

I have been apprehensive these last few days, but in the end I almost have no choice.

Those who know me, know I am rather fair skinned and having English (ie British) parents, mean very fair skinned. I get sunburn just thinking about the sun. Anyhow, in my youth sunscreen was not an option. Many hours spent on a cricket field, baseball field and hours on a bicycle (and in the pool) have finally caught up with me.

About a month ago I noticed one of my moles on my arm suddenly changed colour, grown bigger and got more red around the edges. This got me to a skin specialist. The specialist biopsied and removed a rather large area, about double the size of a R5 coin. Results came back, melanoma. Which would be fine if we had caught it early caught early - but this one is serious. They now have to remove a much larger area, and go much deeper into my arm. This is a day procedure, so not that much of a train smash in terms of training, BUT! They have to also do skin graft, either from my shoulder, or thigh, and that keeps me off the bike. A lymph node is also on the cards, to make sure we have gotten rid of the cancer completely.

Doctor said to be sure the skin heals, we are looking at up to 14 days of minimal movement, and then gradual more movement. The doc said in 4 weeks I should be fine to ride, but no real riding for 14 days minimal. But my arm will be bandaged for 3 months.

Loosing 14 days of training at this stage is a huge thing. The risks after that of falling, accident etc causing more damage and more scaring are just to big, especially in the middle of the Karoo, late into the night.

So with much sadness, I have to pull out, I really don't want to because I feel like I am chickening out, because I am undertrained and needed the 14 days to make sure I was fit enough to finish. I hate this feeling of chickening out.

If anyone is wanting an entry, with accommodation in Ceres and also Sutherland, drop me a PM and we will sort out the details.

I will be putting my entry into the classifieds as well.

My last words, WEAR SUNSCREEN !

Hard luck Slowbee :( Was looking forward to your race report!

I trust everything will heal up quickly and now you have no excuse to be unfit for the 2015 version

Shew, not nice!! I really hope docs can sort you out and all goes well. TK will still be there next year ... and you can do the down ride which is much easier

Bummer! I reckon the TK is really nothing compared to what this means in your life - good luck and heal soon!

Let us know how it goes.
