Hi, I am busy with my first SS build. I am experiencing a few challenges, but loving it. One of my challenges: I decided to get a half link chain, YBN MK918H SINGLE SPEED CHAIN. I am in the process of shortening this, but my little chain breaker only managed to break the chain and then bent/broke the replacement pin that came with it. The replacement pin is too long to fit into my chain breaker to push it back. I do not have a vice, otherwise I would have tried that. Hammer and nail did not do the trick. Where can I find a chain breaker that will be able to handle this replacement pin (as in the pic?) http://www.rushcycles.co.uk/smsimg/247/4051-10415-full-half_link_chain_pin-247.gif

Any other advice on getting the chain fixed?

Thanks!

eish...halflinks, very lekker and strong to ride, not so lekker to fit and clean.

Jcmeyer showed me a trick or two, so first things, get a proper workshop chainbreaker, the ones on the multitools don't work to nicely since they are meant for smaller diameter chain...He has a rav-x one I think...not expensive and does the job well.

Now onto breaking and linking a halflink....

You don't have to use the pin supplied with the chain, actually I have never used the ones I got, all you do push the pin past three of the plates, but leave it intact on the fourth, this is tricky and requires a bit of finesse, then re-link wherever you want using the same pin and plate.

Thanks rouxie. I have already pushed the damn pin out. I tried the 3/4 way, but my chain breaker was too small, so I thought the replacement pin is the only way to go, well, it was not. :-(

I will go and hunt down a proper workshop chainbreaker and try again.

Thanks for the reply!

All isn't lost

You said you made the chain shorter, so you can use the 3 or 4 links leftover to get the chain to the right length again...will be a little more admin, but doable.

Also please note there is a specific way a halflink fits on the crank....its not like a standard chain where you fit it any way.

Haha thanx for the kudos rouxtjie

Have a look at the photo on this thread.

Its the truth....lost count of the amount of times I have told the wife...."just quickly going to safari, struggling with the chain"

PS I have set a new SA record for a tubeless conversion on my back wheel....42 seconds...boom. Sealed and holding air.

Here is a bit of help.

I have been using this chainbreaker for about 3 years now and it works perfectly. It was about R130.

What you can do if you dont have a bigger chainbreaker like the one above is the following.

Start on a new link and push the pin 3/4 of the way out so it looks like this.

Then you can join the chain as follows.

First line chain up and then flip up the outer link plate on the side away from the pin.

What this does is it make the chain a littler narrower and it should fit into a smaller breaker and then you can push the pin through half way. Then push the outside plate back down into position and then push the pin all the way through.

Excellent! Thanks a mil for the advice. I do not have a workshop chain breaker yet, so will try your "flip-up" technique tonight while hunting down a proper workshop chain breaker that will not break the bank.

Thanks again for the replies. I really do appreciate all the assistance.
