For those of you whom aren’t living in the south of Johannesburg let me set the scene for you. Yesterday afternoon just before four the sky was as black as night. Across the news they were warning us and the Free State of possible tornado’s, half and hour later the storm broke and while getting undressed from my work clothes and into my commuting gear all I could think of is, “Man I would feel a hell of a lot safer if I had lights on my bike.”

The storm carried on till way after I went to bed. On a couple occasions I was woken from my deep slumber by thunder and lightning which sounded like God was unleashing his full fury down upon the trees next to my window.

The early hours of the morning, half past two to be exact saw a hail storm that came to add to the carnage already done. This was not an ordinary Johannesburg hail storm that usually comes on a Friday afternoon on a hot summer’s day that only lasts an hour and then clears up, no this storm brought down hail the size of cricket balls and broke car window and building roofs.

After quickly jumping out of bed and checking if my kids are all ok and that none of them awoke and are in bed petrified. I climbed back into bed once I realized not even an atomic bomb could wake them before the roaster crows.

By the time I left for work this morning on my trust steed, the sky water clear bar the odd puff of a cloud. There was literally not even a breeze to speak of. It took me a couple of kilometres to get my mind to stop making movie references to “The day after tomorrow”. Only once I was able to do that, was I able to appreciate the beauty laid out before me and enjoy every single pedal stroke.

As I wildlife enthusiast I know how beautiful our country is, but it wasn’t until this morning that I could truly see it. The storm had washed away all the filth in the gutters; it had sent all the rubbish hiding under the nearest “Af dakkie.”

This made me think, Imagine if we had a country filled with politicians that cared more about the country and its people than lining their own pockets, imagine just how truly unique and beautiful OUR COUNTRY would be.
