Joshua1 Posted December 2, 2013 Share Hi all, I bought an old tandem frame which I want to build up using a cheap donor bike from Gumtree.Looking for some guidelines as to what type of donor bike would be okay, what type of frame this is and what I should look out for when starting this project? Basically looking for something that me and my wife could go and have some fun on, never know might even do a race or two on it as well. I have attached a picture of the frame. Has the chain that links the two.
droo Posted December 2, 2013 Share Make sure the front fork and wheels are strong enough to handle a tandem. I speak from experience.
Mongoose! Posted December 2, 2013 Share get a tandem crankotherwise you will not be able to use clip on peddals - left is right and right is left - at frontrear has two drive sides - two right hand clip on peddals dont work...haha Joshua1
straatvark Posted December 2, 2013 Share Make sure the front fork and wheels are strong enough to handle a tandem. I speak from experience. +1, can't highlight this enough. Buy the best you can afford. (definitely not the lightest) My original front wheel imploded after a couple of meters on the rim after a blowout on a downhill, not pretty... surprised my wife is still getting back on. Joshua1 Posted December 2, 2013 Share Make sure the front fork and wheels are strong enough to handle a tandem. I speak from experience. Making sure it can handle it would be? Using it and seeing if it breaks? best donor bike would probably be..... wait for it.... a Tandem I got this frame for R100, not something I planed. I would not have started this tandem project if it was not cheap.
droo Posted December 2, 2013 Share Making sure it can handle it would be? Using it and seeing if it breaks? That's how I did it. I don't recommend it though. A proper fork is way cheaper than a visit to the emergency room, and far less painful. Eccentric1 will no doubt be along shortly with some advice on where to find these things. Kilo Master Posted December 2, 2013 Share I have a spare triple ring truvativ crankset set for a tandem (pilot and stoker which came off a Raleigh T6000. Think I also have the BB's but not sure if they will fit your frame?) and a set of Mavic tandem wheels (Shimano 40 Hole hubs) that I am prepared to sell. R 3000 for both. If interested pm me?I am in CT.
