I'm looking for a 27.5 wheelset that is not going to break the bank.

This is the two options I am currently looking at.

American Classics Terrain that comes in at 1845g : http://www.evobikes.co.za/wheels/wheelsets-mtb/american-classic-terrain-650b-tubeless-disc-wheelset.html

Shimano MT 35 - weight unknown : http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-mt-35-650b-wheelset

What else is their available? Or must I wait just a little longer until there is more options available? Going to use it on my SS.

Thanks!

Look at having your LBS build you a set with ZTR crest rims.

If your budget is tight, strip your current 26" wheelset and re-use those hubs on the crest rims to bring the cost down.

Did Cape pioneer on mine and did not have any issues

I want to replace the stock wheels that came on my Scott Spark 740 with a lighter racing set. I've been looking at the following options, below.

Any comments about any of these? As these are new products, I can't find any reviews and need some feedback before forking out my hard earned dough.

Novatec Flowtrail @ R5,500:

American Classics Race @ R5,495:

http://www.evobikes....-wheel-set.html

MAVIC Crossmark SLRs @ R11,500:

Of course, the MAVICs are the ultimate wheelset, but I'd still like to hear if anyone has any feedback about these.

Have a look on BuyCycle.co.za as well, quite a few options there.

American Classic 650B Race Wheelset - R5,899.00

I just built up a set of ZTR Arch ex's with hope hubs, albeit in 29r version. Bling red hubs and nipples for the missus and black hubs and brass nipples for me, the fat ou(50g heavier build). I am super impressed with both the rims and the hubs (for now) I seated my notoriously difficult Schwalbe tires without sealant first up. Three pumps and they were seated, no problems. Based on that fact alone I will go with the Arch Ex's for my 650b conversion soon. My 2nd option would be the Novatec Flowtrail. What Iike about them and the classics is the metal strip in he hub to stop the casette from eating into your soft aluminium hub.

As for the Mavics. I destroyed a set on my 26" within a year XC riding and had endless freebody issues. The other day the missus rented a bike with Mavic wheels, same freeboy issue. Its probably just a matter of regular maintenance on it, but still something I dont want to do.

I got the AC Race about two weeks ago for my Anthem 1 650b, and can assure you its the best buy you can make for your bike. They are suberbly light, stiff and spins soooo fast on those excellent AC hubs. The 29er version is R2,5k more! My bike's handling has become light, nippy and climb effortless. Its really good value for money

Thanks, my 26" hubs is really old and not worth the effort. Will Maybe buy parts as I get more cash and build myself a descent wheelset

Cant help but your best bet is to keep an eye on MTBR. Always a good place to compare things :-)

One advantage of the Novatec's is that the axel conversions are included. I enquired about the conversion kit for the AC's and these add another R1000 to the price.

BrandonF's review has me thinking though: would it be worth spending that extra grand for the 115g weight saving and wider rim?

Maybe this will help you! I got the wheelset + the 15mm T/A conversion from Rob at Booth Bikes for R5200, that is a good good deal.

Helpful advice, thanks. AC is bragging about the (better) wider rim. What tyres have you fitted on these - TLR or normal? And your experience mounting them?

Thanks Brandon. Will call Rob and see if he can do the same deal for me.

I run Rocket Ron Front 2.25wide and Racing Ralph Rear 2.25 wide Non Snakeskin Tubeless ready. Reason for wider tyre is for better protection of the depth of AC rims, narrower in my exprience are more prone to dings and scratches. Easybike sells these tires for R550 each, and so far riding Durbanvillw Hills trails that gets some rocky section exposed over summer, no hassles.

Tubeless setup had to be done with a compressor or at a Garage, no hassles, seals up nicely, holds air.

The tires only weigh 485gms, now that combined with the low weight of AC Race!! Enough said!

I've just loaded a pic of my bike in the forum "Where has your bike taken you today", you can see how sweet those AC Race wheels looks!

One last comment. Wider rims are definitely better, even for XC. The bigger fooprint "fattens" up the tire, and at lower pressures dont feel like it will roll off the rim in corners. The arch ex's are 21.6mm. So anything along those lines will make for a nice rim with a 2.25 tire.

My tires always used to feel like they were going to roll off on the old giant p-xc2's. I think they were 19mm

Very cool, I dig it. I'm already picturing these on my bike, hope Rob makes my weekend :)
