First I need a Bmw x5, not the Diesel, and a holiday house. Then also a pretty wife who doesnt work. Then maybe.

You need to get your priorities right young man.

First the Santa Cruz, then the BMW X5, then the holiday house. When you have all of those then you can consider the wife thing if you still really want/need one.

Probably other brands like Scott better value for money

https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/133221-scott-spark-29-epic-failure/

Seems like they are giving some trouble. and better value for money does not equal a better bike. Like the Scotts, almost bought one. But the twinlock system is troublesome compared to the Brain sytem on the epic. That being said, I bought the Camber. Epic is to race orientated for me.

Agreed. I think you solved my problem.

I had the luxury recently of riding both the spec epic pro 2013 it was a month old and straight after that the Rocky Mountain 999. Both not cheep bikes. Rocky about R18 000 les. I suggest you consider both bikes as I like to say don't follow like a lemming, till you tired all.. Read reviews

That Rocky was a dream to ride. It felt a bit more racy and agile. But both are really good. You need to be pro to separate them. I noted XTR brakes on Rocky (retrofit) were superb.

Good luck.

i adore my epic but i just wish id known what an absolute nightmare it was going to be to maintain. this is only (so far as i know) true of the s-works bike which is apparently not designed for joe bloggs who doesn't have a full time mechanic. strikes me as a bit stupid that they sell them to people if its so unsuitable. its an amazing bike though, if i was buying again id just buy one down from s-works. its such a well balanced bike, its brought my riding on so much as i really can trust it. do it!

I absolutely love the rocky mountain brand. Such sexy machines. But in all honesty, in Cape Town I found them stupidly priced, actually crazy money. Would have been my first choice over my Spez. But because my Spez was specced much better for much much less I went that route. But no doubt, they are Dream machines, and infact I dont know anyone who owns one. So quite special.

Fantastic bike, don't get turned off by all the brain bs. I serviced both my brain shocks this month (have one on my epic and my stumpy FSR ) and they cost less than R1000 each including transport too and from Cape Town. In fact my entire bike service and both shock services cost less than my mates Merida service. Go do it. You won't regret it.
