Freewheel/Hub body replacement

Hi all

 

I have a ALL TERRA Alloy Sealed Bearing rear hub freewheel (10sp) that needs to be replaced. It off a 2012 GT Zaskar Elite. Anyone know where I can source a replacement (either original or generic) ?

Cant seem to find a serial number or model/make on the freewheel body

Its totally seized...wont turn at all (or at least not without some serious persuasion)

 

LBS advised that it should be replaced, but would appreciate a 2nd opinion. Sealed cartridge bearings so if they can be replaced it would be cheaper than getting a freewheel body. Guess that mean a special tool to get the bearings out?

I would have a go at getting it apart and replacing the bearings - should be relatively easy, especially if you have a blind hole bearing puller (I do) and can find out how it comes apart - looks like you might need a special tool, but usually once you figure it out they are simple to work on.

Had a look at the Parktools site and from what I can gather the biggest challenge will be removing/replacing the bearing cone. If I can get that out, I should (fingers crossed) be able to replace the sealed bearings and then re-assemble. In this case I guess its lucky that cartridge bearings are used.

that is why is said if you can get the right tool, I had a go at mine, but a few beers and lots of swearing later I decided to get a new one.

 

ps. that graphic is missing a seal that fits on the outside of the adjustment washers

Also once tried to open and service mine,even dad a go at making a tool to remove the cone,gave up as could not get it open.

The bike shops will most likely tell you its not serviceable.

I found my hub freewheel bodies of that design were packing in so I rebuilt my wheel with hope hubs.

As I said, a lost cause.

The tools, time and new bearings will cost more than a new body.

The Oracle has spoken.... :) This is a fact and not an opinion.

 

It's 100% certain that diy if you have to buy tools to do it will cost more than replacing it.

vs Puller set cost.... R2500.... mmm

 

Although if it were mine I would strip it and clean and grease the bearings right out the box - brand new....

Off the topic but I saw a blind hole puller set at Adendorff for R675-00. Not great quality but a lot less than the R2500 mine cost. Don't often need it on wheel and hub bearings but it is magic for suspension bearings
