First Mountain Bike

Hi

My name is Michael & I am new to the forum.

Need help in buying my first bike.

Had a look around over the weekend with a friend who is already riding & these are the the 3 bikes I came up with that I liked, doesn't mean it is the right choice:

Specialized Camber 29

KTM Phinx 32.9

Silverback Sprada 2

I am looking for dual suspension & budget to spend on bike is +/- R20k

I am 1.88m & weight +/- 85kg

I really like the camber & when visiting shops & asking staff about it they all had the same answer " i do not really know about specialized, but I know they are expensive". The only shop with any info on the bike is the dealer selling it...

Any input will be much appreciated.

Hope to be riding soon, seems like a great community.

I am not an expert, but if you are starting off, rather start with a decent entry level bike, instead of spending 20k+, and you might not even enjoy the sport.First ask yourself: What is my short term goals? a]get fit b] to improve my riding skills or c]enter a stage race. If you are still learning the ropes and getting fit, save your money, and buy 2nd hand

Yo Michael,

of the 3, I'd say the Camber every time. More versatile and stronger than the other 2, and has the backup locally to boot. KTM aren't really in the local scene anymore (don't know what happened there, but they were only here for a short time, dunno if the agency has passed on to a new guy or not)

Another option to look at would be the Giant Trance 275, which is very decently specced for pretty much the same price. But the Camber is a VERY capable bike, and you'd be better served going for that than the others due to its versatility.

seen as you in Cape town, give Cycle Factory a shout, they should help you out with knowledge. Everyone how has a Spez likes them but then again everyone who has a Momsen loves them... plus since the law suite thing i am so anti - Spez at the moment. Buy something that will bring you pleasure every second that you are on the saddle not the one that looks cool or the one that all your friends are riding.
