Problem with front derailleur

Hi,

Yesterday I did the Bouckaert-Soenen 72km and all was fine with the bike apart from the brake incident which was my own idiocy. After the lucky draw, I saw the chain had come off the front rings. I battled to put it back on, and once I had, noticed this piece of metal with the word 'token' on it sticking though the chainring. Does anyone have an idea as to its purpose? I'm not sure if it bent while I was attempting to put the chain back on. I also can't find any images of derailleurs with a piece like that. This is a Sora derailleur on a Silverback Strela 3.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks.

as far as i am aware its a retention device to stop the chain dropping off on the inner side of the blades. dont know of the effectiveness or what sort of set-up its intended for though, i would suspect its for a 3x9/10 set-up where the granny has been removed to create a 2x9/10 without an actual 2x9/10 shifter.

as i say thats a complete guess.

Hi There

Looks like its is a chain catcher that has bent.

No doubt that it's a chain catcher that's bend. It's purpose is to stop the chain from dropping on the inside. You can remove it and set up the gears perfectly or bend it back to original position.

Got this off the web and photo of what it should look like.

A simple precision-made kit that provides valuable insurance against front derailleur malfunctions.

Ah, thank you everyone! It makes all the difference in google if you know what it's called! At least it seems simple and cheap enough to sort out.
