Hi all

Okay so I took apart my bike to give it a nice clean, re-grease and re-lube the other day, everything is in working order, expect for my gear at the back ranging from derailleur to cassette.

I am going to upload pictures of everything. First issue is, these two nuts which is found next to the cassette, what do they do? Because when I tighten them my wheel can't turn and when I loosen them up to give them some play so the wheel can turn the wheel itself feels loose, which I cannot imagine is a good thing.

Next issue, how far should my Jockey be from my cassette? I watched some videos and read up, people say 6-8mm other people say 2-4mm. What do you guys think mine should be? I have a Shimano Deore Shadow Tech. I have uploaded a picture of my current distance, which I think might be a bit too far? I might be wrong here.

Thanks a lot for all the help and support from the people on thehubsa, this isn't my first thread here asking for some advice and help and I have always gotten good replies. Thanks, you guys rock!

:D

those are hub nuts, the keep the bearings and related components inside the hub.

it is an art form to adjust them correctly and as such best left to the pro's, to loose and all sorts of crap will get in there an ruin the bearings and surfaces. too tight and you'll be slow.

That's the jam nut for the right bearing cone. If it's loose enough to unscrew, take it to your LBS and get them to set it for you. Otherwise, buy a set of cone wrenches, a chain whip and a cassette spline tool and learn to do it yourself. It's handy to know. The link that Fanie posted above will show you how it's done, though there will be a lot of practice and swearing in between.

And while you've got the cassette off, take off that flippen pie plate and throw it in the bin. It does nothing except look silly.

Could not agree more, I still can't get it right.

Now I go to the LBS (local bottle store) get six of twelve or so beers and take said beers with my wheels to a good mate of mine that does one heck of a job servicing hubs while I play spanner boy/barman
