I travelled with my 29'er in a bag over the festive season. Even with the added protection(pool noodles on everything possible) and as many Fragile stickers as possible , Kalula still managed to ding my rear wheel beyond repair. My 2c, buy a box! Spend the money and avoid the disappointment. PM me if you're interested in this preloved once used bag.

I've got Tura bag, its ok but not great. Wheels bags separate so who knows. Used it plenty times and luckily no damage. Bought a EVOC bag and prefer it.

Does a 29er fit in the compact ?

NO idea.... :) but I can fit my 29er in the full size one without dropping the seatpost - just have to loosen the handlebar and shift it to one side - call them - they will know.

Look at the Thule one, I got one and its great. Apparently can take a 29er too.

That local Safebox is a good option, but it really is very big and you will have trouble carting it around.

You will need to decide about how much you want to take your bike apart vs how big the box is. Think the Thule is a good inbetweener.

I also have a Thule box - while the 29er does fit, it is NOT easy.... but the box itself is bulletproof.

edit - And I had better add - my bike is a SMALL...

Morning

I have this year alone planned three trips whereby I wil have  to box my bike , where can I look for a box that will fit my 29 niner or my XL Merida road bike ? I saw some EVOC boxes back from K2C flight ,  but they seem to big to fit in the  back of a small rented vehicle , by the way what do the EVOC boxes go for?

+ 1 on the Evoc soft bag.  The only thing that does not fit is probably a fat bike, although I have not tried.  My XL 29" Stumpjumper FSR fits comfortably, You need to either drop the seatpost and remove the handlebars and that's about all.  To get 29" tires into the bag you do need to let the air down slightly, depending on the volume but the fit nice and snug.  And do take your rotors off, I know it is a bit of effort, but far less effort that actually trying to straighten them when you want to go for a ride.

My positives of the Evoc over a hard case are the following:

  • Weight (just over 6kg).  With a free bike limit of 23kg on some airlines you will struggle to fit a bike into most hard cases and make the limit of 23kg.
  • The wheels protect the frame.  If I had to choose between replacing a frame or a wheel I would definitely pick the wheel
  • It rolls super easy and with it rolling in an upright position makes it easy to negotiate the humdrum when you exit the luggage collection at the airport as well as bus, tram, train and house doors.
  • It has plastic rails underneath so going up and down stairs is simply a matter of sliding it on the rails.
  • Special adapter for road bike forks makes the even a road bike fit nice and snug.
  • Lots of pockets to store pedals, skewers tools an so forth.

Mine have literally gone around the world a few times and I only have a small tear in the one bag where it probably got caught on the edge of a conveyor.  They are expensive though, bought two of ours at Cyclelab for R3600 2 years ago.
