It is unbelievable how screwed up the facts are on these forums, especially when it comes to women's racing. Probably all the small minded boyfriends and jealous fellow riders doing the posts.

If you have been following some of the media you would have known that Chrissie and Anriette was left out of the team due to their age. Chrissie is one of our better international riders and so is Anriette. The selectors made the choice so it had nothing to do with "saving for the Argus". Riding overseas would probably count in their favour.

As for the Herald Azonic, you also got your facts mixed up. If you check the start times, the women started separate, so get your facts straight.

I think let the results of the overseas racing speak for itself before ANYONE critisizes ANY women. They have a tough job ahead and lets rather support them as fellow South Africans.

If you ask me this exactly is the reason why our country is in the state it is in. Because we don't grant our fellow citizens any opportunities, but rather BACKSTAB them and critisize.

WAKE UP.

by all accounts there are some of the best riders taking part in the Tour, there is no better way of measuring yourself than by competing against the best. can't understand why the selectors left our "better international riders" at home?

good luck to the girls that are there, they will come back to RSA so much the better cyclist.

Chrissie was not selected due to unknown form coming back from short hiatus.

Anriette WAS CHOSEN for the team to go to NZ, and declined to go with, and I know that the choice was made for her to focus on the Argus.

I remember at the Graskop Hill Climb Champs Marissa beat most of the top guns taking part going up Kowyns Pass... Really strong rider and by the looks of things not someone to mess with on the bike!

So Crux, you seem to have the inside track on this issue. Pray do tell, why were the girls left less than 24 hours to arrive in NZ, transfer to the race venue, rest, acclimatise, (11 hour time gap after flights/stopovers of approx 16 hours), rest more, go for a ride to get the feel of the place and then be ready to ride an intense crit against some of the very best cyclists in the world in order for SA to improve its ranking.

It would seem that these poor girls are being set up to fail, just so that some people who don't really want them to succeed can say "I told you so."

Everything that surrounds womens' cycling in SA seems to be done on a whim and defies logic. Little wonder, then. It was not as if the girls were given an opportunity to rest on the day of departure. They raced with the super vets finishing in a time of 24 minutes faster than the other Elite ladies.

I have travelled to NZ a couple of times. It takes about a week to adjust. Did CSA not learn anything from the trek to the tour of China? Or was it a case of the few extra nights of accommodation was going to cost too much. Crazy, crazy, crazy. Who there knows anything about high performance????

I said it MIGHT have been the Herald, it could have been any race held in PE. I spoke to my friend again and he confirmed the incident. Get your glasses on and start reading straight before you tell other people to get their facts straight.

Better planning is definitely needed. Like buckstopper said, the tight schedule they're on is unreasonable and unfair. Under those conditions, I suppose this year's participation needs to be used as a platform from which to build on in the future. I expect a full report from the team manager AND riders would be submitted afterwards to ensure progression and not regression occurs.

I don't know of a Mr Wagener (team manager?). Assume he's experienced at this otherwise he wouldn't have been selected, right? Team support - masseuse, mechanic and manager are must-haves, not nice-to-haves in cycling.
