Hey copperhead, it was nice meeting you. I was also thinking about throwing the towel in at the half way mark with all the punctures, my mate gone and seeing you sitting there :-) Then I decided it might build character if I pull through that mess...

I must say it was not a nice ride at all. I might take a break from the 100miler for a while.

What was it with all the punctures, the one day/race i decide to not take a single spare, pump, bombs, tubes or tools, etc. I double flat, front & rear. Luckily the sealant i still had in there sealed the holes, but i was suffering drag with deflated wheels. I was honestly not expecting that since it's considered to be just district roads, was it thorns or sharp rocks I couldn't tell, just realised i was losing pressure so never noticed what was the cause.

Pretty Epic day out.

Don't think I've seen so many people stopped for punctures even on a 'proper' MTB race.

I think the main culprit was short strands of barbed wire in the road; I saw plenty and got nailed by a couple.

really, are you serious? I didn't see that. Someone must've dragged it out of the way before I came through.

That must have been before the 100 merged with the 50 route. I did see a few pieces barbed wire lying around, but as I was crawling along in the wind, I managed to avoid them. Did not encounter people fixing flats next to the road at all.

I had a bit of a mare of a ride yesterday.

But, just wanted to say thank you to the 2 guys who gave me a tube & a bomb respectively. The guy who gave me bomb also reminded us (my mate stayed with me) that there was a halfway cut-off.After 3 tubes, repeated stops, patches, pumping & bombing we got into halfway with 90 seconds to spare.

GC239 of 242 at 81km. The last tube held and I made it home , finishing Pos 129.

Thanks guys, I'll pay it forward.

I did thank you on the road, but I just wanted to say it here as well, in case you're on The Hub

Next time I'll think twice before borrowing my friend's cyclocross bike the night before and not checking that both Tyres are tubeless!

Oh, and to the guy in the bunch my mate and I passed just before the last water point. Please don't call me a "damn roadie " again! Didn't appreciate your tone.

sorry for that horrible race you suffered but I must admit when I saw you in the start chute with that machine I was jealous as I was contemplating going CX myself but hearing of your race dilemma I'm now happy I didn't. I just want to know one thing did you walk or ride down that steep rocky descends? Must've been somewhere at the halfway mark.

I rode it all. Up and down. Took it slow down the rocky and off camber bits.

The rear wheel was tubeless and I had no issues with it at all. Had the front also been tubeless, the CX would have been ideal . My ass was fine.

i cant believe anyone would ever do that for any race anywhere! I only had a co2 with me on sat as i couldn't find my pump in the car. i normally have both. i would never ever ride with nothing unless it was an xco race maybe but even then..depends how far from the start the course goes.

it was a gamble & silly one too, it could've cost me hours of agony stuck in no mans land waiting for the sweeper vehicle. i promise you Leona if you saw the terrain you'll understand, but if you didn't want to be in the gutter (wind) it sometimes meant riding on the verge of the gravel road in the invisible thorn bushes.

There was a proliferation of thorns this year, especially in the early parts of the race. I had them popping out of my tyres at regular intervals followed by streams of Stans as the tyre sealed. I stopped twice during the race to top up my tyre pressure due to the accumulated loss of each thorn popping out. Yesterday at home I must have pulled another 20 thorns out of each tyre with tweezers!
