Good day

I need some insight please. Took my 2012 SB Mercury 1 for a service to a particular golf shop(?) last week. They sommer replaced the seals on the rear float rp2. Got my bike back Thursday, only had time yesterday to go for a ride. Now the float rp2 is leaking/seeping oil at the top. And there is too much sag.

Now, did they mess up? Did they use too much oil? Did they use faulty seals? Is the pressure wrongly set?

Is it normal for this to happen after replacing the seals (guess not)?

I hope it is something small - can't replace it as yet.

I have done an aircan service on my RP23 a couple of times and there is generally a 'light' ring of oil for a few rides after servicing and reassembling. I just wipe it off (as you should after/before a ride anyway, both shock and fork).

As for the sag, you need to get your own shock pump so you can set these up yourself and keep on eye on your pressure in the unit and your fork.

Thanks. Its much more than a light oil ring. Will take it back tomorrow. Wanted to know for what can I hold them accountable. I am a bit technically challenged with this stuff. I am in no mood for them to spin me some story. How much does a pump go for? And where does one find it?

Pump should be around R300+ onwards, can probably buy online or at a well stocked bike shop.

Not sure of Ryder quality, you also get RockShock ones and Giant ones as well

Not sure whats what with a RP2 but with a RP23 there is about 2-3ml of fluid in the aircan so prehaps the bike shop has overfilled the unit hence the excessive discharge but regardless they need to fix it if they took it apart to do the seals.

Leaking at the "top"? If it is leaking from the adjustment knob area you are in for a major service, that is damper oil. If the leak is where the air can screws into the top they could have pinched the o-ring seal when closing it, in which case it is probably leaking air as well. If it is leaking from where the damper shaft goes into the air can it could be from the float fluid leaking from the pressure chamber into the lower chamber - probably with air loss as well - or they could have put fluid below the main piston. Any of the latter should not be a big fix. Float fluid lubricates the air piston.

Thanks. Apologies - my description of the "top" is very vague. It is leaking from where the can is screwing together. There is a slight noise as the piston moves in and out. I attempted to adjust the resistance (sag?), which did help a little. But my main concern is the amount of oil that is leaking out after yesterday's ride. Its not "litres", but much more after the ride than what was present before. I noticed some before I went off, but ignored it as I thought it is normal after replacing the seals.

Take it back to whoever serviced it and get them to replace the large o-ring in the top cap (and top up the float fluid). Afterwards pump it up and submerge in a bucket of water to check that it is not leaking.
