Hi All

Newbie here.

What are the major advantages of single upfront other than weight and one less thing that can break.

How difficult is it to get use to for stage races and general trail riding.

Long term effect on the knees?

Regards

Schoemie

I run 1X10. Worked like a dream for Epic. No problems at all. Been using this setup for about a year now. It's simple and easy. That was my reason for changing.

What you running in the front?

Big disadvantage is price,I am curious to try it as well but I do a lot of road riding with my bike as well so needs to be versatile.

Makes sense, and that adds to the question if you are more limited with a single setup upfront?

Hi copperhead.do you not feel limited in options for gearing given different terrain?

Only major advantages!

My take on it:

No longer have trouble with shifting in the front.

Don't have to shift in the front and the rear when the gradient changes drastically.

No longer have any double gears, although differences in ratios are about 3% bigger comapred to a 10 speed 11/36 rear cassette.

Smaller likelihood of chainsuck.

No need for any form of chain retention on the front ring, regardless of the terrain, hardtail or full suspension.

It really is a simpler setup for me, probably the greatest change I have ever experienced on the bike.

There are some small negatives:

You need to have a look at the elevation profile before you take on a race, at times you might run out of gears though.

I have a 32 Wolf Tooth up front. Gearing is just fine. I was still riding while some were walking sections. I had enough on the flats and downs. It certainly is each to their own but it works perfect for me. 32 and 11-36. Rather be able to ride more hills than walk more.

I have the exact setup and LOVING it, not feeling the need to change. I have toyed with the idea of running a 30t up front, but decided against and will investigate the option of adding a 42t on my cassette and ditching the 17t sprocket. Will allow me to keep the same ratio but will help to climb really steep sections a bit better.

Just do it!! :)

Hi Schoemie

I currently have XO1 on my bike and it's seriously the best setup you will ever ride on. I have had no problems

with it, despite the very muddy conditions in both Sabie and Dullstroom at this years MTN races. It just keeps on being awesome. I ride with a 32T up front, some climbs get tough, but then you just HTFU up and carry on.

I have also done the Sabie Experience with them, no problems with the knees (then again, I am still a youngster :whistling: ) and it was great fun not having to worry about shifting up front, just concentrate on the awesome trails. The maintenance is also easy, so it takes a whole lot less time getting everything ready for the next day, so that is a big plus in my opinion.

So from one Newbie to another, if you have the cash to splash, do it!

Have been on XX1 for about 2 months. Not a single missed shift and chain has stuck on front ring like glue with no issues at all. Biggest surprise to me is how quiet the setup runs. Absolutely silent. Just love it. Agree on the issue with choosing front rings. You may need a few ratio options. Look at 32 and 34 to start for most types of riding. Only downside I've had is if a piece of "thatch grass" gets into the front ring it sits there as tight as the chain. But its a product of the design.

Took my bike in yesterday to fit XO1 groupset. Had to replace rear hub to fit xd driver for the cassette.

Can't wait till this afternoon to get it back and take it for a test run.

Will let you know how it goes.

I did the 1x10 conversion, losing the 17 and replacing it with a 42 at the back, I am on 32 in front and on the fast flat stuff I miss the 17 as there is too much of a gap between the 15 and the 19, granny gear the 32/42 is almost the same as my ratio when I rode 2x10

hi guys. Please help! I'm running 1x10 with xt medium cage shadow deraileur and 32t leo daisy front chainring. Works like a dream, but I have had three chain drops on rocky sections. I might have been conservative with the chain length, should I remove another link?

Oh I fitted the chain using the big chainring method without running chain through deraileur, but then added 4 links instead of two...

Was riding 1x10 on 32t and 11-36 for a while now. The only limitation that I found was that you are forced to go really hard on the steep climbs (low cadence and high power) and this wasted too much energy in 50+km races (for me).

So now I added a 42t Wolftooth (thanks Janos @Evo!) in the back and ditched the 17t and 15t and added an old 16t I found. The latter is easing out the big shifting gap hat may be an issue for some.

Did my first ride on Table Mountain this morning and was wondering why I actually did this because I never used the 42t...but jokes aside it is a perfect bail out gear if you need to catch a breath on a steep climb or hit something like the MF series that is simply not doable for me on 32-36.

Technically: The shifting from 36 to 42 works amazingly buttery with the XT Shadow+ (med cage). Well done Wolftooth! Only thing is that the shifting in the lower gears of the cassette has lost a lot of crispiness because of the big offset between jockey wheel and sprockets, the downside of the extreme derailler setting to clear the 42t. But I am still playing with the settings. In this context I am very curious if someone has experience with the X9 Type 2 derailler in such a setup?

Overall I am completely sold to 1x10.

Would go for X01 if there wasn't the silly cost of replacing chains and cassettes every few months. So until this changes I will keep on tinkering ;-)
