Yeah... I think he seems a bit overly arrogant.

 

I agree that there is a style to commuting. I commute with my wife very occasionally and it freaks me out. She is so cautious that she is dangerous. There comes a point where you have to let everyone know what you are going to do, and do it. If you "um and ah", cars will loose patience, or not understand what you are trying to do, and try take gaps or pass you etc.

 

Be polite

Be cautious but confident

Expect everyone to do the unexpected

Follow the rules

That article can be summed it in one sentence: He decided to take a pro-active approach to cycling rather than reactive, its like the difference between defensive driving and normal driving i guess.
