Hi everyone

I am planning to buy a Silverback Stride 20 2013/2012 model. How is the bicycle? Will I be able to have years of enjoyment. I will use it to ride around the block and sometimes on gravel road. I also looked at the Scott Aspect 60 2013 model. My price range is R3000-R4000 and second hand R2000 +- is it reasonable?

Regards

Kevin

My partner has a Stride 20 which was his first MTB, if all you want to do is ride around the block then I'd say it will more than suffice. His bike survived .magoebaskloof on V brakes - in the mud.

That said... Be warned. This MTB thing becomes addictive and you might start find you wanting more and kicking yourself for not having bought a bit better to start with :)

Thank you for the quick feedback. Hahaha if that's the case i might consider making a loan or just cough up and buy something a bit more decent. I am a beginner and this will be my first bicycle for the long term. Only received positive feedback on Silverback. This might be a stupid question, but what is slyme laced wheels?

I love my silverback.

The slime is a sealant inside the tube which, as the wheel rolls the sealant fills in and effectively repairs any small punctures, the guys on here will tell you go tubeless, but in my limited experience, ever since putting tyre liners and sealant, I've not had problems with punctures out on trails.

Awsome! Definitely a must have for where i stay. If i can manage to buy a Silverback Stride 10, would it be that much better than the Stride 20?

The stride at least has brake discs so I'd say yeah, but in terms of specifics I'll leave it to the more informed, but just try out the bike, buy at the max of your budget but remember you still have to buy a helmet, and other paraphernalia. Have fun.

Love my Silverback Stride 10 (2012 model with 2013 frame), been going well over the last 2 years (over 4000km done).

The 2012 Stride 20 came with disc brakes (mechanical and not hydraulic), if you can find one of these for the mentioned price I think it will be a good deal.

When I bought my bike I upped my budget from R3000 to about R4500 (this was middle of 2012), simply because of the amount of "better" components I could buy with the money. I now understand why some people will pay over R20k for a bike.

A friend borrowed a bike, and liked it so much that after 3 months he spent about R8k on a new and much better bike, and he enjoys the riding now even more than before.

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to the MTB community. Don't be over hasty, make sure of exactly what you want and what you need to best perform the task with. Buy the best possible bike component wise. I was in your position 11 months ago, had no budget but bought what I could afford and could do with for the time being. 11 months later I'm on a dual sus bike specced like I wanted from the beginning, all in with kit etc around R35k.

Like they say, as addictive as cocaine but twice as expensive......

Shop around and keep an eye out for the classifieds here on the hub, bargains pop up from time to time, or simply post a wanted ad in the bike section.

Best

I had a Silverback Stride 10 and loved every minute of riding it. It's great bike. If you can afford it, buy it, you'll love it Kevin.

my advice ..spend the extra bucks and get the stride 10 - has hydraulic discs. Once you have tried hydraulic discs you will never go back. I found a 6 month old stride 10 second hand right here on the hub for 3500 had only been ridden a few times. I been saving up for a bike for my kid so I bought that. It is in perfect nick. It has nice components ..not so fancy that you will cry if anything gets wrecked. You can upgrade as the components wear out which is where the addiction gets serious......

Thank you all for the great feedback, Thanks to you guys i have decided to look for a Silverback Stride 10. I know i will have years of pleasure with the bike. That few extra bucks i have added to my budget will bring its part. Once i get addicted which i believe i will, i will definitely come and ask your advice again :D Its tough making such decision when you know nothing about the sport.

Dear Kevin. My advice is think very carefully before starting this journey of addiction. Biersteker and I could be the same person - I started off on a Silverback Stride 10 and a year later I have a R30k carbon duel sus. Also: consider getting yourself a pimp, it will help make extra cash you need to afford race entries and gear. Have fun!

Hi Miguel, i am currently on the lookout for a stride 10. or even scott aspect series. I cant wait to start riding! Only problem is that im struggling to find a bicycle of that quality for R3000 second hand. If i cant find any i will have to stretch my budget which will take me more or less 2 months longer.

I'd suggest save up some more and try and get one new if you can. There are also financing options as well such as bike life. It'll cost slightly more but you'll be riding sooner.
