Thinking of upgrading my Merida 8 speed MTB.

Wanted to upgrade to 10 speed. , however some people say rather do the shocks. I have heard it is a coil spring. What is benefits of upgrading the shocks. Just the wait or does bike handle different?

What is your opinions it is 29er with hydraulic brakes.Merida.

Sell the bike and buy a newer model, it will cost you much more to upgrade. Adn will prob bot get the money back when you sell it

I agree. It’s not worth spending your money to upgrade. The price of components will be beyond a completed new/newer bike.

Forgot to add; unless you have some kind of sentimental value and want to keep it for that reason or maybe do the upgrades as a project...

My first MTB was a good old Mongoose TYAX from Sportsman's. I did the upgrade thing over a few years and it was a really fun project. Learnt a hell of a lot. I did the wheels first, then the groupset over a few months, then the fork from a Suntour to a Reba Team, and finally the brakes. It was a real custom bike, and I had the satisfaction of knowing I was passing guys on a Sportsmans Warehouse bike, (even if it strictly wasn't one anymore  )

I eventually replaced the Mongoose frame with a Bianchi frame from Solomon's and then had a really nice custom bike.

BUT, and it's a big BUT it wasn't a cheap financial exercise - Money-wise I definitely would have been better off buying a complete bike - however the experience gained in appreciating the difference made by upgrading different parts individually has again probably saved me some money in the long run.

My current ride is an entry level Scott Scale with a few smart upgrades (learnt from the TYAX project) which make it handle and ride very close to my wife's R30K Carbon Scale.
