Horizontal or vertical?

Which is better, a rear shock mounted horizontally or vertically? Which is stiffer? Does it matter?

 

I am in market for dual sus 29er, and on the list are:

 

- Merida 3000

- Scott 920

- Giant Anthem X Adv

- Cannondale Scalpel

 

The Merida & Giant has vertical mounted rear shock, whilst he Scott and Cannondale has horizontal mounted rear shock.

 

I do not want a gomma-gomma ride.

Nope. No "better" way. It's all in the linkages and leverage ratios.

 

Of those I'd go for the giant. Best suspension kinematics of the lot....

It's the design of the rear linkage. VPP, Maestro, 4 Bar, Horst Link, etc. that makes all the difference. Giant Maestro and Merida is a really nice setup
