I could not find a relevant forum for this, so it goes here.

Does anybody know where I can hire a tandem in JHB? I would like to try one out, but I need a medium/medium or medium/small tandem. Linden has been kind enough to let me hire one, but they only have large/medium.

That size was fine when I wasn't the pilot, but now I will be and a large really does not give me much control when I am at the front.

I am planning a cycling trip with my girlfriend in France. Where we go will depend on how well we can climb on a tandem so I want to try one out ASAP.

I would not recommend a tandem as holiday/tourist bike. It require more concentration and will reduce the ability to look around / pointing out attractions.

A tandem with a granny gear climb as easy as a mountain bike - so that should be less of a concern.

Well that's why I need to try it out. I plan on doing the GABRAN on a tandem as a test ride, but wabt to see how it goes long before then.

Um, let me suggest separate bikes...

Its easier on both parties....less romantic and a relationship saver...

*nod* - why my partner and I have vowed to NEVER do canoeing / river rafting in one vessel EVER again.

Any "team" sport in a single vehicle / bike / boat / canoe with SWAMBO is soeking for trouble.

Even a mixed team (two bikes) can go horrible wrong - you and your missus need to get on REALLY well in times of CRISIS and not descend into a full-blown fight when things get tough.

Why would you want to spoil a perfectly good holiday with a tandem?

Twombles - My wife and i rode a tandem for the first time at Sun City Race some 4 years ago. Basically test rode the bike in the parking lot to make sure setup was ok and 30min later we took part in the race. Really loved it. From what i understand tandems can make a marriage or break it. I think in our case it was the former!

Unsure what GABRAN is and where it happen.

I cant encourage using the tandem enough. It is great fun & a team sport. We found the climbing easy, but slow - there is enough gears. (I would have no concern taking my wife up the Galiber with a tandem) (EDIT: I would rather walk down though.)

If the main purpose is to tour in France - then the pilot will miss part of the vista. (Although your stoker might be able to describe it to you afterwards)

Try it out. Whatever you end up using - it will be loads of fun. Enjoy!
