Does anyone know of a company that would be able to offer insurance to cover riders on a trail (and the landowner/organiser)? Or would most insurers be able to offer this? Obviously it needs to be as low as possible to keep the trail fee accordingly low.

As mentioned above. AMA Rider is the IMBA affiliate for SA. If the trail is graded, marked and maintained according to IMBA standards, and you are a paid up member, you are covered. Fee is generally R1500 per year for the entire trail, which includes liability insurance.

I wonder how this works considering if the trail is adequately marked and maintained there should be no liability in the first place. I imagine that in the event of this cover being issued, there would be some level of disclaimer required at the starting point of the trail letting all know that if they run out of skill it's their problem?

I also guess that liability would be difficult to prove in most cases unless of course a tree or something like that falls on a visitor in which case some level of proof would be required to establish that the tree was about to fall down and no-one did anything about it. In this case surely the insurance would be nullified because the required level of maintenance was not carried out and the insured would be responsible for any claim?

Could this explain why membership to IMBA and included insurance is not so steep, because a claim will most likely not be paid to readily? I'd like to see this policy wording.

The liability is also for the landowners, veld fires, people leaving gates open and livestock getting out etc.

Well, so far one company has declined to quote, numerous have said they don't offer PLI and so far the only one that has come back to me is offering R1 million cover for R5000 per annum, with a R2500 excess. I cant believe how hard it is to get some cover!
