"Schoeman?s trainer, Alex Cooper, said the rules of the International Cycling Union said two groups were not allowed to finish a race together if they had a separate starts and were racing for separate prize money.

He said the referees had not done anything to stop the two groups from merging during the race.

Cooper has already taken up the issue with the Women?s Commission in Cycling.

He and Schoeman will also express their disappointment to the event organisers"

IF she had won would it still have been a problem? She has never complained befor about racing with the men.You cant win them all.

That is also the impression that I got. I'm sorry, but if you are such a sore looser, then why still ride? Clearly she is not having fun anymore.  All the ladies in that bunch was in the same situation as Anriette. And they all coped. What makes her so special?

Yep, if it was such a problem I am sure the women could have all dropped out the back of the Vets bunch.

?Towards the end, we had a situation where some of the men were helping the women.?

Really? It was not 2-3 years ago when a rider from PE rode with her the whole race, also helping. Fact. Was it a problem then? Guess not.

I think she can win mostly when the ladies race alone and the pace is mediocre, letting her sit in the bunch while the other girls are attacking etc, so that she can sprint at the end mostly rested. When the pace is fast all the way, the "sting" is gone...

On numerous occasions men went across to the officials in ther car to get the bunches to split. It seemed that it is what they wanted as the VB bunch caught the girls after about 12km. That is how it stayed well done to Cherise for nearly outsprinting the men.

I think it would be better to keep the ladies appart in their own group, not mixed with a mens bunch.

I cant think that the ladies like starting with men - it messes their race up completely, and basically takes out all the tactical elements of their race. Sure, they ride a better time, but breakaways are almost impossible (so no breakaway/TT specialists can do well). Not everybody wants to suck wheel the whole way. Hotspots for the ladies are then almost meaningless.

I like how the reports talk of cherise's "surpise win" - hell, she came second last year while still a junior and is our best prospect for a world class female rider......

I would have been surprised if she didn't win.

In a race like the Argus, that is impossible. The only way to have a "ladies own" race is to have it on a seperate day. There will always be men in the mix. Most of the ladies actually liked having them there, we've discussed this topic before. They say it raises the standard of lady's cycling. Too bad for one rider that chose to use it as an excuse for not winning.

ok, the gsport report got it right:

Taylor's win on Sunday was by no means a surprise. She finished second in the Cycle Tour last year before going on to become the South African junior champion in both the road race and time trial. She then capped off her final year as a junior by collecting the silver medal at the 2007 Junior World Road Race Championships in Mexico.

supercycling got it oh so wrong:

Cherisse Taylor (MTN) surprised everyone to come first in 2:52:50 with Lynette Burger (Cyclelab Toyota) on her back wheel followed by five-times winner, Anriette Schoeman (Proline).

bull***

Anke ( think it was the first on back over chappies after the detour) broke away and tt all the on her own.

It can be done.

I dont have a solution for the problem, but having the ladies race in the mens bunch is not it.

I would like to know how the power numbers of the ladies compare when riding in the mens bunch vs riding on their own. The goal surely has to be to make the racing harder, not just faster?

What was so amazing about this young lady is the way she won. She enjoyed it like a kid though when she had that interview it was as a grown up. No wonder this girl likes her cycling so much. It shows...

....and sunday was not a show like some I know. It was a moment of pure adrenaline enjoyment.

like they say" RESPECT...!!

That depends which mens bunch they start with. Perhaps is they start with 50+, but I cant see one of the ladies breaking away from the vets bunch in the current super series, with Andrew M, Jock Green etc. The ave speed of the bunch was 43.6 km/h at the last event.

Perhaps they should be racing against the men in the same start bunch, not just with them?
