Campagnolo Record vs Campagnolo Chorus

Hi all.

 

I have a decision to make between keeping a 2011 Campagnolo Record 10-speed groupset on my bike, or to do a groupset switch to a 2012 Campagnolo Chorus 11-speed groupset.

 

Which one of the above should I opt for? And why?

 

Both groupsets are still in "like new" condition, and both groupsets are full carbon.

 

Please share your thoughts.

i did this a few months ago.

 

record 10 speed is a fair bit lighter than 11 chorus.

and if well maintained there is not to much to choose between them in feel and movement.

 

i do however prefer the newer STI's.

also something to note: the record 10 speed has a carbon front and rear derailleur, the chorus 11 is not carbon.

 

hard to say if it is a upgrade or just a change, or maybe a downgrade due to the extra weight?

this is a call you are going to have to make

 

IMO having the extra gear hasn't made any impact on my riding whatsoever.

go the Chorus route.- might be a touch heavier but worth the upgrade

better lever/ grip is the main difference.

10sp is being replaced by 11sp in all the brands on the market - soon 10sp parts are going to become scarce and expensive.

the first chorus was / is still alum. front and rear deraillers - this was changed to all carbon with steel bolts instead of ti.

the gearing of the 11 gear opens up a range of gearing options - depending on your riding style and needs. it could be of benefit if chosen correctly.

I beg to differ.

 

Campag, unlike other component manufacturers have a good "record" of after sales and support. A look online and you'll see you can still buy 8 speed bits, as well as being able to buy full service kits for Ergo levers etc.

 

I don't think the argument is 10spd vs 11spd, or weight, or amount of carbon contained in the components. It's all about looks, style and status.

 

The Record 10spd says you've been riding Campy for years, and the groupset is probably just starting to wear in. Ideal for matching with an old school brand of bike, Willier, Bianchi etc. You chose Record, it didn't choose you.

 

While the Chorus is pretty much the previous year's Record, it does say that you're new to Campy, and probably only bought it because it came with your bike, which is probably a Cannondale or Specialised or something similar. Functionally, you won't notice the difference, and it might be nice to have another gear that you don't use, but you'll always get those looks from people either thinking you are cheap, or aren't a real Campy connoisseur.

 

Given that choice, I'd go Record.

my campy record is about the same age and still going strong

I have had two Campy gruppos: First, I had 10spd Veloce: Which I got in 2003 and rode until 2013, and I am currently on 11spd Super record.

 

From my experience you will not "miss out" on any ride quality whether you go for the lower or higher groupset. I had low-end and high-end and shifting has always been bang on. Don't let that affect your choice much, given that these two are so close to one another.

 

I have found 11spd slightly more finicky than the 11spd in terms of tuning it to perfection.

 

When riding 10spd you do not miss any 'extra' gears. It is only when you ride 11 spd that you miss extra gears if you go back less (esp riding 9 spd).

 

+1 for keeping record.

 

(this will also mean that you can justify an upgrade at a later stage)

Have 11spd super record, also have 10 spd record on another bike. I had the first generation 11spd super record shifters and they werent as crisp as my 10spd ergo's. updated to the new 11spd and a big improvement.

 

Nothing can take that crisp shifting from 10 spd record away. that feel is what I ride that bike for.

To be honest, I dont take anything away from Chorus, esp not 11spd, why dont you try both and see which you prefer. after all, its campagnolo, the performance would be identical.
