I've just been through the same exercise... Exact same length and weight and I also want a strong machine that is capable over most terrain types.

From a logical point of view the Giant Trance seems to be the best value for money, but the standard fork and wheelset don't seem to be bomb proof and somehow it doesn't really have that WOW sensation compared to the other bikes in that class... I didn't really consider the enduro, I was looking in the 140mm travel range. The enduro is a really hot looking bike though...

I ended up saving another few months for a Santacruz 5010. It did wreck my budget, but I'm getting a good wheelset and a Pike fork. will be arriving this weekend, can't wait!

Come to the F place with us next year!

PS

Linden cycles have (at least they still had it last weekend) the gold "limited edition" Trance SX 650B in a large frame size for a price within your budget. You're far away from Joburg, but could be worth considering...

I would take the Trance and bomb a Pike and dropper on you will have one hell of a Enduro machine then,Spez are still new at this 650b thing Gaint are jacked up on it already.

That is a nice bike! Enjoy.

Trance seems like the safest bet at the moment.

If I put a 160 Pike up front then I am sitting with SX Geo

I was keen on this bike but then there is OD2 and I have heard the fork is made of used teabags. Like the 34 stanchions and talas though. All in all it would need to be like 30 for me to consider it. Last time I checked they are 38k. Maybe I should wait for them to flog the old ones.

The 5010 is a awesome bike.I rode one with a 130mm Fox fork.

What travel Pike are you fitting?

Not sure you can say the FSR suspension on the Enduro isn't as good as the Giant Maestro. The Enduro always gets good reviews and little if any crit of the rear suspension.

It's simple, the Enduro is an amazing climber for what it is. Way better than one would expect. In my experience (I rode a 2015 S-Works 29 for a day) I found its climbing ability on par with my Pyga OneTen. Granted, this was with a CCDB, and in climb mode, but it was still surprising. I expected it to climb like a dog with that much travel. Nope.

Its a 160mm Pike, but as the 5010 is a 140mm bike the shop suggested to space it to 140mm not to compromise the riding position...

Not sure how much difference this will make in the ride, I've never had the privilege to ride a bike of this caliber or travel, so I'll have to see when we do the setup.

Any suggestions for or against spacing a fork?

Pyga 110 is a very different bike to the Enduro so you can't compare them, the geometries are very different.

the TALAS 34 on there is way better than the 32 on the Trance, it's just the damper that's a bit of a dog. A proper damper will set you back about R 3.5k, which is at least better than a new fork - but it's still not going to be a Pike.

Best bet if you're leaning towards the Trance is to flog the Fox and buy a Pike - the SX has standard taper, not OD2, so you won't be sitting with a complete donkey.

Otherwise look at a Pascoe - Revolution's got a special on a frame, Pike and Reverb for about R33k - then it's just a set of wheels and the drivetrain off your old rig and you're good to go and nominally in budget. (Until you start upgrading in a month's time, but that's next month's problem...)

Depending on size, I've got a mate who's flogging an SX Advanced that's about a year old, which may help with that whole pesky budget thing. PM me if this interests you.
