Sorry for my ignorance but what is a dropper post and why is it important ?

Here is the real answer:

A "dropper" is a suspension seat post. It allows the rider to drop the seat lower, so that the rider can more easily maneuver his/her weight around the back of the bike when riding technical terrain.

Guys who hate on droppers have either never used one or are butthurt dirt-roadies who walk the chicken run at every Nissan Trailseeker.

About R2200 for the Giant unit. It's probably the best of the lot.

But don't forget the baggies and fox t shirt also needs to be factored in.

If you buy a Rs reverb then you broken jeans and hemp t's are all you need

Some things about bicycle wheel sizes are immutable facts, one of it being the roll out distance (all other things being equal). The table below gives you an idea of roll out distances for various wheel sizes.

Now its up to you to build upon that, taking into account things lik

  • pros and con's of each wheel size. In other words, which wheel size plays to the majority demands of the terrain and track you are riding on. In general, the con's of any wheel size are relatively small, and only take on problem status because someone on the internet is shouting about it.
  • tyre pressure
  • type of tyre (for eg: knob height affects roll out distance)
  • gearing
  • personal fitness levels
  • cost of purchase
  • cost of maintenance
  • and last but not least, personal preference which you achieve vicariously (1 million internet opinions), or go test some bikes yourself (relationship building with real ppl at the bike store)

There's not real checklist for this sort of decision, but in hindsight, a few key things can be distilled out of collective experiences.

roll out distance has nothing to do with how fast the bike will roll. Its just how far a wheel will roll in one revolution.

One revolution at the crank is only equal to revolution of the wheel at that gear ratip. A gearbox makes the smaller wheel roll through more radians in order to achieve the roll out distance or "development" as its called on the gearing charts.

Stop with this poo. In reality the wheel rolls as far as the force at the crank is able to rotate the wheel through the gearbox.

By continuing to spew the crap of roll out distance , its the same as the ANC offering a better future under Jacob Zuma.

Stop it, just stop the crap

Calm down junior.

how is it crap if its a fact? For the same whee RPM, it will roll further. Fact. No where in my post did I say it will make you roll faster. But its a fact, one of many others, upon which the rest of the machine+rider builds upon. Same way ppl make a choice about wheel size relative to how 'easy it is to maneuvre' on single track, and build on that.

It's the latest fad.

It allows the seat to drop by up to 125mm so it doesn't foul your bum or testicles.

If you don't have one you can't claim to be an enduro rider. You'd still be classified as an XC Jay boy if you use a rigid post.

Remember accepted practice is baggies, loose fitting fox t shirt, trail type lid, flat pedals, takkies with black socks, and knee pads with a lumo or camp camel back.

Widest bars you can safely manoeuvre through your house at 5am without breaking any crockery and the shortest stem.

A 29er just tops the look

its an irrelevant fact because its meaningless within the context of the engine or drivetrain.

It only serves to distract from real issues of fit and function
