1x10-what cassette to remove?

Most remove a smaller/bigger ring at the back, and add in a 16T to take up the slack of the removed ring and then the larger 43T will fit on the freehub first

If you add in the 16t, you need to take out 2 sprockets, 15 &17.

That's if you buy the OneUp cassette ring.

I bought the Wolf ring Cassatte ring, removed the 17T sprocket and the 40T then slots in behind the 36T.

I have a 32T up front, it is more than enough. I am actually considering going to a 34T.

I rode a 3x10 before and just stuck to my centre front ring, a 33T, for about a month to confirm the frnt ring size.

Hope this helps.

Can save quite a bit by buying a second hand road cassette for a bargain for the 16T, then you only need the wide/Narrow chainring and a 42T(if you want that big)

For me the problem is not the smooth shifting between the 15 and 19 (that happens without issues). My issue is I'm commuting flat roads and are missing my 17t. I have managed to find a 16t and will replace the 15t with the 16t this weekend and hopefully it solves it...

Yeah, see my other post just above yours :D

I managed to get 2 cassettes with even spreads by using an 9 speed HG61 cassette and 10 speed HG62 cassette.

Ended up with 11-41t 10 speed and 12-36t 9 speed

EDIT: oh yes and an extra sprocket (17t IIRC)

I just run a normal 11-36 with a 34T up front, have yet to find a hill I cannot get up and if I do then will HTFU ... so I do not worry about all the changes on the back cassette.

If you don't need a 40 or 42 at the back then don't waste your money

Yes that's what my LBS suggested I do. I guess its all about playing around to see what suits your riding style. Thx for all the great advice gents. Will post a pic when its all done.

I've been wanting to do a conversion like this for a while. I currently have an XT RD and 11-36 cassette on a 3x10 setup. The cassette and chain are getting worn and thinking to do the 1x10 conversion seeing as though I am replacing. So get a new 11-36 cassette and then remove 15 & 17, replace with a 16.

Would the RD work with an 11-42?

Also, what are you running up front? I'm considering a 34t (thinking a Kitted.co.za 1 would work nicely)

You most probably have a long derailleur cage coming from a 3x10 so it should be fine with the 42T.

What rear ring are you looking at, OneUp, wolf tooth, etc?

Yeah, have a long cage. I initially was looking at the OneUp. Any feedback on what's available? I'm all ears.

To the converted: are you running chain guides, or do the NW chainrings hold on enough to stop chain drops. Would love to get some feedback from anyone running a kitted ring.

I used to use 32 on front and 11-34 at the back. I struggled on the climbs when my legs get tired, so now I use 32 on front and 11-36 at the back. It is much better on the climbs, but I struggled to keep up on downhills, so maybe it will be better to use 34 on front and 11-42 at the back.... Otherwise upgrade to 1 x 11spd

evobikes.co.za recently had a special where you got the wolftoorh 42T and a FRM NW front ring for like R1700.

Check it out.

I have a wolf tooth 40T and am very happy, the 16T bundled with the OneUp would be nice but is not a must.

Am I right to say that 32 / 36 (0.888) has a similar ratio to a 34 / 42 (0.809)? Not sure if it's as simple as ratio of number of teeth or whether you need to factor in sprocket circumference or anything else.
