In case there were any doubts about how capable the new Reign is..

Well I reckon most bikes will get you in the air. Question is what happened when he landed ;)

hehe...so you saw it on PB as well

btw - where were you for enduro?

Gesuip on a wine farm

I will ride the next one.

Bit of an OT question: Where can I get Giant lock on grips and the 150mm Giant dropper from? I used to buy Giant things from Action but they no longer exist.

Giant dropper has JUSTlanded again, so you'd better act quickly!

Best place - Giant Durbanville.

Few questions for the 1x11 converts:

I’ve got a Reign 2 (2015 Large) which weighs in at 14.8kg including pedals. Bike is 100% stock except the tires have been converted to tubeless. I'm planning to replace the entire group set (crank, bb, shifter, cassette, rear derailleur, brakes, and chain) with Shimano XT 1x11. Anyone know how much weight this will save?

After my first ride, I found the Reign climbs very similar to my Trance which weighs 13.9kg. It maybe took 5% more effort to get to the top of jonkers, but that could've also been due to pushing a friend most of the way up.

Also, what size chainring should I go for with a 11-42 cassette?

With the removal of the single ring, and the dropping of the shifter, cables, FD and change of cassette, I dropped around 400/450g or so. With the move to an XT crank, you can drop another 100g or so from that.

As for the ring - I'm on a 30t, but I'm a craaaap climber. I find it gives me enough top end (mostly) for the trails I like to ride (jonkers / conters / hoogies / paarl etc) but can be a tad too low for long flat sections (whatever those are)

I plan on getting a 32/34t oval ring sometime soonish.

I've got the same setup. I reckon you'll save about 500-700 grams. You're losing the front derailleur, shifter, chain guide and a front chainring.

I run a 1x10 setup with a 42 out back. My front ring is a 30. It works fine for me coz I hate riding uphill and that gets me to the top of most trails just faster than falling over speed. It can spin out on fast descents. But if I want to go fast downhill I have a DH bike for that. I have a 36 that I sometimes swop out to if I know I'm not going to be doing much climbing.

So short story. 30 works for me but might not work for you.

The whole 1x thing is NOT a one size fits all thing AT ALL! You need to factor in the type of riding you do and the type of riding you'd like to focus on. And most importantly how strong you are. You'll be miserable pushing a hard gear if you aren't strong enough making you hate the bike. Don't listen to the geniuses who tell you to HTFU.

Yes. And lemme tell you - I kaaaaak off on the climbs, mostly. And i'm on the same as you, only 11sp. 30t/11-42.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'm a fairly strong climber (seems like all the squats in gym pays off) and was originally trying to decide between a 32T or 34T in front. Having read the posts above I think a 32T will be perfect for me (also providing a little more top end). I stay in Stellenbosch so mostly ride Jonkershoek, Eden, G-Spot, and Helderberg Trails.

Weight wise from searching the internet a bit I hope it'll shave off about 700g (including removing the chain guide), making it very close to my Trance. Suppose then it's only the slacker HA making the technical climbs a bit more difficult.

oh yes, the chain guide too. Yeah - close to 700g or even more.

Slacker HA doesn't really affect the technical climbs as much as you'd think. As long as you get your weight centred properly, and carry on pedalling... Even tight uphill switchbacks (Hoogies / conters / meerendal climb) are pretty darn simple. Rode Hoogies at a snail's pace on Friday (keeping HR below 70% as an exercise) and had no control issues at all.

Awesome! It should be just under 14kg then with lighter pedals :)

As for the HA I quite agree. Didn't notice much difference going up but makes a huge difference going down!

1.8m 108kg. Plan to be 90kg. Long process.

Should take about 3-6 months with a good weight training program and meal plan ;)

Yep. Time is a big issue now that my OH has started league squash, both ladies and mens league, and training for Jarvis/Kaplan cup (team based nationals, effectively)

So HIIT and cutting the portions it is.
