What's most important is to do the right thing that represents your value system and NOT really expect others to do the same.

Some folks just don't greet... It's kinda weird, but who am I to truly judge a stranger.

Different strokes for different folks.

What matters to me though if I am in technical trouble and a fellow cyclist pass me without enquiring whether I need assistance.

There is an unwritten rule in the Cyclist Ethical Handbook for THAT.

Post of the day goes to Dale!!!!

Ag honestly, just get over it.

its not personal.

I suspect you're one of the non greeters? Screw whether it's personal or not, its being friendly. If cycling is such a burden that you cannot smile then why do it?

Why does this mean so much to you....heck.

PS also the no 1 rule ito riding a bike is HELPING YOURSELF. I will only stop for ladies, men...sorry bra, it will be the last time you "forgot" your bomb / tjoob / snotplug / chainlink / multitool / valve core / mini bottle of sealant. Klap n toon pel.

Absolutely, but no matter how much you plan and have everything you may need to help yourself, things go wrong, tools/bombs/adapters fail.... That you cannot plan for and is when you may require help.

I am going to have to correct you there...99% of the time the mechanical you will have on the trail is tyre related. You should have backup plans for you backup plans.

Always carry 2 bombs, 1 adapter, tjoob, snotplug kit, crowbar tyre lever, mini stans, tyre boot.

Now sealant will most of the time take care of punctures...so much so that you won't even know you had one. So that is plan A...stan's takes care of punctures. If for whatever reason stan's doesnt do the job in kicks plan B

Sealant is dried up....add mini bottle through core, bomb

Hole is too big...plug with snot strips, bomb

Still leaking air? You are probably dealing with a long cut here...Tyre boot, tjoob, bomb...that is plan C

If you having kuk, well then phone the wife to fetch you, you probably need a new tyre...this will be plan D...phone a friend.

Now and again you snap a chain...chainlink.

Anything else I don't understand how trailside assistance will help you.

Come to the platteland, here even the cable thieves and illegal miners greet.. occasionally we come across other riders, but that's normally my brother and his wife.[emoji12]

Most of the time you can fix it yourself. But it's still nice while working on the bike/waiting for your lift to come pick you up, to have the occasional person that passes greet you and ask if they can help

For 99% of times I agree with you, but for that 1% chance when Murphy is laying all if his law down, that offer of help would be welcomed.

that is just it, you should always be able to fix it yourself and have the emergency tools / supplies to do so. If you can't well then nobody passing you should be able to.

I understand that it cuts both ways, and I have also been on the side of the road helpless where I have run out of cards so to speak. Did a spin around the cradle and on my way home snapped my chain due to a bad shift(about 3km from home). I realized that I forgot to pack my multitool and it was in my mtb emergency kit...couple of swear words later. Took my roadshoes off, and klapped a toon for the remainder since wife wasn't answering her cell. Lots of okes passed me on the way back from the morning rides in their cars. No one asked or offered and I don't expect them to.

Last time I forgot my multitool I can tell you that. Tough love I say.

Please note, ladies are a different story.

So what does a fellow rider have that would help you in the 1% and why don't you have the kit / skills.

Maybe I'm a new inexperienced rider who can't figure out what is wrong or don't have the required tool yet and need some guidance/help.

Not everyone gets on a bike and knows everything from the get go.

When you visit your local bike shop, do you greet each and every person in the shop? They are all cyclists too, you know.

So if you complain about riders not greeting you on the road, you are a hypocrite if you do not greet everyone in your LBS every time you visit it.
