The 4colorchappie got me so worked up, i posted before i read what actually happened. You right, the bloody ouens are so sneaky these days. Back in the day i build up a bike from scratch out of the classifieds here. Met some great friends along the way and had some good fun Ouens like Dick, Marius, Straatvark, Willehond, Pokerface and the Vaalies like oom Big Ben, holy roller (with his PINK boa) AKA tumbleweed and Evan - do they still frequent here?
Thomo Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I was in contact with this du toit character the other day too ... some wheels advertised on Gumtree.Thought I smelt a rat when he sent pics of tubbies which he advertised as clinchers.I left it there and moved on.Deleted all correspondence and I see that ad is no longer on Gumtree.

That's like handing cash to some random stranger you'll never meet who lives 100s of km's away, recipe for disaster. Probably easier to write this off as a lesson well learnt, the cops have just about fock all info to work with, name will no doubt be fake/untraceable email/cellphone. The best thing is to put the info in the public space like here in this thread so Google can index it and hopefully spread the word about the scam. This is some Sa fraud site where people list all the info of the scam they got taken with, sometimes info gets correlated there and the scammer slips up and identifying info gets out, anyone know what it is called? Real *** one though, basturd got a free handout with your hard earned cash
Skylark Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Something to keep in mind, these guys probably make their living scamming on gumtree/olx etc, so keep a watch on those sites, good chance they will post another ad that looks dodgy/ dodgy reply when you contact them and maybe you can try hatch a plan to trap them. Anyone know of any ploy to trick a scammer into revealing identifying info or convincing them to meet up, probably the best course of action is to prey on their greed?

I guess they think its unlikely you will be anywhere near to those towns to want to pick up the goods in person. I feel sorry for bikeshops or genuine sellers in those regions, but I'll always treat goods for sale from people living there with huge scepticism. There some rated/recognised members in the George area. Coimbra Cycles is a HUB member, can always ask them, though I'm sure they'll charge a bit, but better than losing a whole bunch of ronds. Members in Knysna, Plett too, whole garden route, just ask for the favour.
