My comment on this.

First of all, when is a substance a drug. Like some asked why is gels, bars, etc not performance inhancing....

Ok. Your body needs certain nutrients on a regular basis to function. If you take in substances like carbs, meat, etc. Then your body absorbs these nutrients, what then happen is your body is not in homeostasis equilibrium anymore. Your body can can react and utilise these substances and get it back to equilibrium over period of time. This would be the same for using gels, bars as they are mainly composed off basic nutrients utilised by the body. If your not an athlete and eat loads of carbs you get fat, now that is a shift in homeostatic equilibrium, but in a natural way as this is how our bodies evolved over evolution, same with all other living species. Allthough many people don't do excerise and eat all junk and what more, they caused a equilibrium shift that cannot be returned, but they never got a benefit from it over a short time like drugs.

Now, by using performance inhancing products. Your body is force to shift equilibrium as well, to give you an extra boost to compete for an extended period. But in this case it cannot return in its normal state over long term period. It also change certain metabolic pathways and inhibit certain metabolic pathways to do something the body is not equipt for naturally. Duo to this your body cannot return to its normal state. That is why all performance enhancing drugs is not good for you.

Then, what about creatine and protein intake for body building as it is part of your normal bodies metabolism. By taking in levels your body needs is normal, but in excess. Well for these substances, they are secreted in large taken in quantities and actually do damage your body trying to get back to equilibrium, but then we go and train to increase muscle mass which push our bodies again to a new equilibrium. After long term, the protein can be broken down and excreted without major damage, depending on your diet of course, things like creatine can cause harm as it intergrates metabolic pathways in places it cause other reactions to be halted and cause problems.  But here it gets a bit close to what is performance inhancing and what not...

So, i stick to what is said to be drugs as drugs. To put it simple. A substance you use, is it part of normal metabolic function that came thru evolution and to use the substances in correct quantities of course.

I know as a journalist you should be objective' date=' but your professor just asked you to write an article to be positive about abuse, and I wouldn't be able to do it.Ouch

there is a school of thought out there that believes in her subject matter. that makes it a valid topic. and why's she's doing the right thing in canvassing a cross-section of the cycling community. in this way, she maitains her objectivity. a journalist should be able to put his or her personal feelings on any subject aside, and report the opinions as they are presented to him or her.

Do an internet search for interviews with Doctors Ferrari, Fuentes & Carlo Santuccione. They do not use terms such as doping, but rather preparing or assisting cyclists with "therapeutic medicine". Fuentes thinks he deserves a nobel prize. Cyclingnews.com has many articles & interviews that will help you.

Whats the point. To enjoy riding a bicycle. Nothing as good as having a great base in Desember....and i don't even do races.

I sometimes wonder...... do people still really enjoy just riding a bike like it should be when they take substances. Do they still understand this type of pleasure....or is winning the only pleasure......Wink

Dunno about the others, But Ferrari deserves a Nobel prize, ****, just for his name.

Fuentes deserves a Nobel prize for sure. he systematically elevated the sports medicine to a whole new level. I don't think any of his clients ever tested positive, I think the ones who took a knock got done on administrative errors on his part, but no smoking gun... Look, Chunky can correct my facts, ok.

Good Point WitRot.

I think the guy who just rides his bike for fun with no intention of ever becoming a pro (Epoh??) is not really interested or aware of what goes on. I think thats why there is such disbelief when people are caught or fingered in a doping Skandaal.

When they take the step to become an athlete at the top of the sport the rules change. Anything that makes you better is definately a consideration. A recreational athlete doesnt have the need to expolre these avenues and will probably never have to make the choice.

It will be impossible to spilt the 'dopers' from the purists. There will always be those who profess to be clean but cant resist a little fuel once or twice a week. Its unfortunately never going to change. Sport will always have those at the front, those complaining about the ones at the front and then the people on the sidelines shouting the odds. Its Life.
