Bottom Bracket Bearing

7000km on a BB cup is good . But to be honest I haven't rebuild a cup in ages , because I got hold of a handful of old US cups from a BS and rebuild them all a few years ago . Still using that batch and  got about 6 pairs left . The set on my SS are going for 6000km now .

Damn, I must be doing something wrong. My 2nd BB is starting to play up, +- 5000km (for both bearings). Must be the occasional river crossing.

gonna ask a real dumb question here:

how do u know if your BB bearings are stuffed?? play in the cranks or does the cranks turn over slowly/ with resistance?

or some sort of grinding noise?

i have been riding my road bike for about 5 years avg 2000km a year. i have never replaced or serviced the BB. 105's.

regards

they will feel rough and doesnt spin freely...if you remove the crank and run your finger over the BB on both sides, it should feel smooth...if not they are toast.

Remember a roadbike doesnt get abused ito the elements like a mtb or jumping. So yes, it could well be that your BB is still good

Can't you just pop the 2RS seals (that stands for double rubber seal if anyone wants to know) and just grease them ?

Only if they are brand new, that is when you grease...How many bearings have you worked on?

Just go to your local Bearing Man with the sealed bearing that has seized and get a replacement. Much, much cheaper than replacing the whole BB.

You won't get the Shimano bearing from a normal bearing supplier, Shimano changed the sizes a few years back to stop okes like us from just changing the bearings. They also put a lip on the inside of the cup to make removing the old bearing more of a challenge.

Enduro do bearing replacement kits for Shimano and SRAM BBs though, but you do need a few tools and some patience to fit them.

I counted quickly with my one hand, around 5 and realised I was wasting my time.

I am in the process of writing letters to all the big bearing manufacturers and I am going o suggest that they pack more grease in to those small cavities, even if it means that you will end up with a right royal mess after the grease that can't find a home eventually gets pushed out.

At least I will have peace of mind that I saved the world and brought peace to all mankind.

OK interesting, thanks.

Until a few months ago I had a 2009 Shimano BB on my MTB that served me very well. I was able to replace bearings with the old BB no problem. I now have a 2014 SLX/XT so I guess that changed things for me going forward.

On my Tarmac I have a 2011 GXP BB and have replaced bearings no problem as well.

Sealed bearings for wheel hubs all generally straightforward to replace.

Will take note of your point about the latest changes to Shimano BBs though.
