Importing bicycle from UK

That's basically fraud. I'm not going to be high and mighty, but it's an option you can take if you are ok with it.

One day a bicycle, the next day Nkandla.

Yes, according to existing laws.

But as far as SARS is concerned, the whole Mark Shuttleworth saga suggests that not all these laws are good laws!

I'm not saying that VAT shouldn't be due, but more than that I suggest is debatable.

Just IMHO, tired of paying taxes and getting little, or nothing, for them.

Edit: Awful grammar!

The difference being that he paid it and then fought to get it back, whereas in this situation they were trying to avoid paying it at all.

Hi!

Remember me, my question was about customs and taxes. Please refrain from turning this into a political discussion.

Really irritating.

Okay, it seems that the 30% duty was a bit off.

The ACTUAL duty is 15%. On top of that there's VAT and a 10% vat calculation / handling fee.

So if the bike cost, for arguments sake - ZAR 10,000 - your friend could claim back ZAR 1,667 for the UK VAT (at 20%) and then the bike SHOULD be calculated at a value of R 8,333.33.

Should.

You then take that R 8,333.33 and add 15% (duty) to it, and then another 10% (VAT calculation levy) and then 14% (VAT) to get an extra 44.21% on top of the R 8,333.33.

Which gets you to: R 12,017.49

In essence, this means that you need to add 20% to the UK price, or 44.21% to the UK ex-VAT price, in order to determine what you need to pay Customs upon arrival.

Remember - only your friend will be able to claim the UK VAT back, as it will be reflected against his / her passport and plane ticket.
